Newbie to the scene!

Hi Guys,
Just want to introduce myself and say hi, been reading your forums and am so glad I found it as there is a wealth of information on it to a noob like myself. Always been interested in sea-fishing as has my dad and a year and a half ago we took the plunge and bought a 2nd hand Sea Lord. Up till then it was going on the odd charter or going out with mates etc but the feeling of having your own boat,especially when ur out on a nice day is super. We've had our fair share of newbie problems, engines, trailer etc but thankfully its all sorted and really looking forward for the new season.
Anyhow, here come the questions...

Im wondering what people's opinions are of fishing locations etc. Were in west dub and so far we've just been out to Howth or Dun Laoighre but mostly down to Cahore in Wex. We used to go out a lot down there about 5-6 years ago and IMO there seems to be a lot less species/quantities these days, especially when the mackers are out of season. Is this the case or have we just been unlucky!?

Also,the only reason we go down to Cahore so much is because the slip is normally reasonably quiet and is fairly wide as I havnt quite perfected the skill of reversing the trailer! But we would love to explore the east coast, Louth,Wicklow, meath....Ive read the slipway section but there doesnt seem to be all that much detail:- directions, slip width, activity. So any info or favoured spots would be welcome.

Last question I promise! During the season, do many members go out on trips together? Not really into entering competitions or anything but it would be nice to get out with a couple of boats, share people's knowledge and experience's and also a bit of banter.

The Sea Lord is a fine boat. Same hull as our Seahog Commodore.

Cheers lads thanks for the welcome. ill register with that site. Its great finding sites like these especially for newcomers. Yeh trev, its a fine boat, we were worried it was too big for our first boat but were eventually getting used to it. Another plus is it has 2 60hp evinrudes so it has nice bit of power and the piece of mind of a second engine.

howya ally just letting u know ther is two slips in wicklow town one is by the rowing club to the left of it . the other is over by the life boat station the local sailing club use it during the summer months mainly. ther are plenty of species out in wicklow bay . me and my mates have a orkney striker, would meet up with you if u give us notice if u come down our way.

not strictly true. The bank of the Boyne estuary is the best 'slip' in Meath. This is accesssed from the Mornigton entrance onto the beach and then over the small hump back bridge. This is the best spot to launch if you have a 4x4. you can launch and retieve at all states of the tide.

There is also a slip on the far side of the river at Baltray but the road down to this is not suitable for towing a boat. It looks like it has been carpet bombed and then carpet bombed again! :roll:

I agree with you there Dirty Fecker but if you launching into the Boyne from Mornington and you run into an engine problems...well you might be going for a ride..!!!!

I wouldnt be sending a novice down there!

Point taken Hush1. Still its not that dangerous. You should'nt really be launching into that river though with a dodgy engine i would agree. Still, Clogherhead is'nt exactly Dunlaoighre either though is it? Not a whole lot of habour there... :D

Thats true and after my few experiences there last year the locals would rather stare at you than offer a hand....thats why I lauched there at 1st light. :oops:
