vhf radio

Can any one recommend a vhf radio with dsc ready?
ive sean some on ebay but im not sure

I bought a Cobra 55 and had no problems - still on offer (white only though) at Marineparts.ie for €135. Great aftersales service from Cobra following the recall - make sure you get the post-recall model.

However, if you intend to do a lot of DSC calling, a unit with a keypad on the mike or even elsewhere would make life a lot easier.

If you are thinking of ebay, make sure it is fully EU-compliant, otherwise Comreg won't give you your MMSI No.

We bought an Icom IC-M421 from MarinePartsDirect last year I can't remember the exact price but is was less than the current price of 220.00, maybe a call would get a better deal.

i bought a Midland handheld International VHF, online last year, paid approc £60, super little radio..would not go without it, and has a very strong receiver.. these guys seem pretty competitive.

not a bad little radio very easy to use.
make sure it is the eu model.

there was a recent recall on thease radios if it is an older post recall model you wont get a licence/mmsi number granted for this radio from comreg.

you would be better to shop at home for a radio you should be able to get same radio at home for the same price hope this helps.

As Jim from Cork, I too have an Icom IC-M421. Well pleased with and recommend.

That's my model - sound radio, no complaints. I have read a post where the author has it as a cheap back-up, but finds the sound quality better than on his more expensive model. If the radio isn't the post-recall model, check with Cobra (they are in Dun Laoghaire) that they still do the free exchange. Marine parts have it in white for €135.

waiting on first boat at the min, getin all the stuff i need gathered up, just wondering what the story is with doing courses for vhf radios? Where can these be done (im in Cavan) or do you have to do one?? What are the regulations??

The only safe way is to check the Ser. No. with cobra - on my box, the bar code panel also says MR F55 EU+ (Maybe the plus means post-recall?). If Cobra are still honouring the free exchange (and I think they have to) it doesn't really matter - it's worth giving them a ring, anyway.

By the way, the old model worked perfectly well, just that it goes against comreg's rules in some way - something to do with frequency harmonics or sumfin.

It is like you say Neil the + is post recall, I only got mine replaced just before Christmas, they were fine about it, in fact they gave superb service.
