as a newbie you would most likely not have seen the previous posts by "wee barry" advocating the slaughter of thousands of doggies a year "to get a scent trail going for the propper fish" and the torrent of abuse that followed

as the locked thread looked to be going that way again one of the mods stepped in to ensure that the same didnt happen again.

from where im sitting it had nothing to do with the fact that a specimen was being claimed

You cannot weigh fish accurately on a boat. If you go to the specimen committee's site you will see there are proposals for measuring some species by length.

The Committee will examine the issue of ìConservation Specimensî over the next two
years. It is envisaged that this specimen category would be based on fish length. Two
species, Tope and Blue Shark, will be considered for this type of alternative specimen
award. It is planned to examine the feasibility of using length measurements to establish
a conservation specimen which will allow anglers to return fish to the water quickly
without the current requirement to weigh on land. Many aspects of this proposed system
including certification of measuring instruments, the types of measurement(s) required,
threshold lengths etc remain to be discussed and the Committee would welcome written
inputs from anglers and all interested parties.

Thanks Paul, thats's exactly and precisely the reason why I locked the thread. It has since been unlocked and an off-topic post split off from it, so it's open for postings again.
