boat tope rig

is there any way of making a animal rig tat has 3 hooks so it can catch dogs but if you do get a tope on it.theres less risk of losing it.and if so does any body hav a diagram on hw 2 make it.

try the shamrock animal rigs, dare i say it, have got a few tope of em only to 6lbs though :shock: :roll: :roll: but fear not some of my club mates who know how to catch tope during animal comps use the same rigs, last club comp landed two tope to 25lbs and one guy lost a decent fish when the swivel snapped. good rigs :D

im worried tat a tope will bite through the mono as i hav had a lot of them do tat on ordinary line

the rig below is one that i was shown but have never been lucky enough to get a run with, but had 84 dogs, 3 ray and huss on a 2 hook version in a session in cahore with no probs. apparently its what the top small boat anglers in bray use.


the top 2 hooks are aimed at dogs, ray, smoothie etc, i find that that the 60lb is enough to stop the constant abrassion of dogs teeth on it.
the snoods are not tied using swivels just with a loop made in the main line. snood length should be about 12 inches

the bottom hook is targeted at all the above but also at the tope since they tend to take the bottom bait first. the vary tough mono will prevent the tope from biting through. some people will use wire but i have been told that this will reduce the number of bites due to lack of movement etc. be sure to put a swivel in beween the main line and the tope snood as it will help prevent the fish from becoming tangled. the bottom snood only needs to be about 6 inches as a biting piece.

yep, it can be heartbreaking , not that i'd know it :roll: but the mono its tied with is pretty heavy dutty stuff, i suppose you could copy them with wire?

you could get one of the shamrock rigs and just cut off the bottom snood and retye using 150lb mono. would do the same job and the animal rigs are among the better tied rigs in the shamrock range. havent heard of any opening, unlike some of their junk rigs

yeah i used their rigs all last year.lasted well nd got fish but the hooks kept coming off.nd it wasted a lot of time on the boat retying hooks on

i have met the guy that owns the company, and i do like to support local enterprise but alot of their stuff has been very poor quality.

if you spend upto €3 on a rig it should be fit for its purpose. the arguament of having to retie it before you use it simply doesnt wash with me. if i wanted to tie my own rigs i wouldnt have bought one in the first place

yeah tats the reason iv decide to tie my own rigs tis year.shud be a gud laugh

generally speaking i like to tie all my own rigs for the boat and shore (except feathers/ hokkais) find it more rewarding plus no one else to blame if its not up to scratch. also like to try out different combinations that no one makes.

do u know wat the best feathers are to use baited on species comps

depends on where your fishing really.

i find red hokkais (baited or unbaited) can be brilliant for many places like kilmore or caherciveen.

other places like in around dublin/ bray etc i have found the mini sabiki type rigs good.

there seems to be a growing trend on the match circuit towards mini muppets too (about an inch long).

nothing is ever certain with fishing, one of the lads i fish with only ever uses black feathers- more through ignorance than anything and has had very surprising catches- like flounder off the beach or spur dogs jigging off the boat :shock:
