Hi Tom

I was out in one off these last year at Carrickcraft I think it was 19 footer they are better built than the 520 or 590 and are a lot heavier than the other 2 as I did own a 520 and was very glad to get shot of it. What carrickcraft told me about the Vanguard was that the hull was based on the Pilothouse but better finished inside the boat and was being marketed as a family boat I think that the 17 with engine was £20.000 and the 19 with engine was around £22.500. a lot of money for a fishing boat

Hi janie what did you think of the vanguard and wat was it like in the water, how come you were glad to get shot of the 520 was it that bad and if it was would you think the 590 is the same, i have a fastliner myself

Hi Tom

The Vanguard went well and was very steady in the water and I liked it but as I said it is very expensive. The Orkney 520 at sea was like a cork that rolled and pitched all over the place and would have you heading for home a lot sooner than other boats when it got a bit rough. Orkney are suppose to be taking the 520 out of production soon. Now the 590 is more like the the fastliner a very sea worthy boat bigger beam and a deeper hull a far better boat than the 520. But as I said that I got shot of my 520 and got myself a nice 6.2M rib this is a far better boat that you can go any were in and you dont need to worry to much if it gets a rough it will get you home no problem.

Cheers
Maurice

Vanguard

There was a lot of hype surrounding the launch of the Vanguard. I was expecting something different! While the finish is undoubtedly the best Orkney have every had there doesn’t seem to be to enough change to the hull. Same old Orkney problem: grand going slow in rough weather but would rattle your fillings in a short chop at speed. I don’t think they’ll recover the ground lost to Warrior, Seahog, Predator etc. with this boat. Still, I’ve no doubt they’ll sell, even at the expensive price.

Hi jim i notice that alright with the fastliner in a chop you really have to trottle back and its fairly uncomportable and as im very new to boating it frightens the hell out of me at times

That sort of dough. You'd have to be mad.

Before i bought the 165 i went to look at a year old 520 with twin 15's included a very basic electronics package and trailer, everything was as new only problem they were looking 11.5k sterling!!!!!

Orkney undoubtley do make fine boats but they are way outa line with their prices.

As jim says take a look what else is on offer.

For the same price of a new Vanguard, u'd be the proud owner of an arvour or even a rodman!!!!!

Or even better still a new 165 warrior and a nice jeep to tow it

Boats

I must say i agree with the guys above. I don't want to annoy anyone who has an Orkney boat because we all love our little tubs but in my own personal opinion i have never seen what all the yap was about Orkney boats. Its a complete mystery to me :? When we buy a second hand boat we buy what we buy for the price that we are willing to pay and work within those parameters. If the boat does what we need of it then who's to complain? But when we pay out big bucks for a new vessel we should want the very best we can afford. There is no availability issues or hidden pitfalls. Merely the design of the boat itself... I do not rate Orkneys that highly myself. The Warrior boats are a far far superior boat. Especially if you are considering a new vessel. Orkneys in general are not that capable of speed and seem to stick with displacement hulls. They have made slight variations to this style of boat over the years but the hull shape of the 175 and even the Raiders and some seahog models allow both speed and excellent sea keeping qualities. Why they have never moved from this design is beyond me. If they were sticking with a winning formula i would understand but that has been proved to be untrue. Displacemnt hulls are fine if you want a slow boat with low horse power. In reality those days are gone. Angling now requires you to move and be able to get to your destination fast. This is both for safety reasons and to access places slower boats can't get to. It is now sadly a fact of life. Speed in itself is not enough however, boats have to be able to shift and handle short chop comfortably and be tough enogh not to damage the boat over time. At this the Warriors excell. The Orkneys certainly don't. Personally when i was looking at getting my current boat i was looking at a 175. Due to price i settled on a Raider 18 which i have found so far to be a very good boat. As i said, i am not having a go at Orkney boats its just that for that sort of price range you have a lot of options. Explore them! There are several boats out there that are good buys for their price ranges. Some of these are : Seahog Samurai, Seahog Commodore, Raider 18, Wariior 165, Warrior 175, Quicksilver 580. These are just a few and some are better than others. All have their drawbacks. Some are better on fuel than others, some are lighter, heavier etc. For sheer rough weather handling at speed the 175 seems to be king. When it comes to fuel it seems to be a bit more thirsty than some of the others as it is a heavy boat. Keep an eye on what the best anglers use. Most of them will have been around the block a few times and maybe had a few boats. The Cork boats festival for example has a majority of Warriors. There is a pattern there. These are top class anglers and this seems to be their choice boat...
