Insurance and Outboard Locks

Wed Aug 22, 2007 1:11 pm

I trawled thru' the site for details of where to go for Insurance and, having checked out a few, am opting for Portcawl as they were 30% cheaper than the best of the rest. However, the proposal stipulates that all Engines must have a warrented engine lock on them. My main engine is a 50hp Mercury which is bolted to the hull and has the mechanised tilt function; my auxillary I can understand needing a lock, although I tend not to leave it on the boat.

Questions: Do I need a lock for the main engine and if so where do I get one. For the auxillary, where do I get a lock for it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Locks

Apologies Slowarm, I must've missed your post fist time round!

Most insurance Co.s insist on a lock on the engine. I've never had to buy one as it always came supplied. The norm is a bolt lock on one of the bolts. You'll see the different types here: http://www.outboardmotorlocks.co.uk/products.html

I don't think they insist on a lock on the aux but if I were leaving the boat on a mooring with the aux in view then a lock would be advisable.

We moved insurance company this year from Euromarine to Porthcawl. We found them to be competitive and helpful.

Make sure you read your policy. Many policies don’t cover the average small boat well as they are modified yacht or cruiser policies. Many policies include a lay-up between Nov and March, not much use if you fish all year round! If you launch and retrieve all the time then make sure that coverage is correct for damage to your boat when towing, especially if the trailer leaves the towing vehicle (your vehicle insurance usually covers you if the trailer is attached.) You will find that a “towing” policy does not cover the boat if it is left on a mooring, say over a weekend, unless this is specified in the policy.

The best thing is to tell your insurers what you are going to be doing and read over the policy they send you carefully they will amend if necessary.
