East coast Tope Locations needed - Not too far out

Hi guys,

I am looking for a few east coast locations where there might be the possibility of a Tope from not too far from the shore. I would like to try for them in the portaboate (12ft). I have a 5hp engine and in calm conditions she will do 10Mph with two people.

Anyway,
Hopefully if we get some calm conditions this summer, I would like to try one or two marks upto 1 mile from the shore line. Does anyone know any likely locations?

the best spot for your set up would be the MULDITCH bank off greystones

handy slip with some parking plenty of tope to be had at the moment head out to the red marker and stay around 5/600 yards n/e and you cant go wrong. this mark is about 1 mile from the harbour you can also expect occasional ray/huss/around this mark as well with the usual clean fish tight lines. :wink:

I don't need a slip..... This boat folds up like a surf board and travels on the roof rack. :shock: I can launch off any beach, once I can get parking withing a 100 yards or so..(Lots of stuff to carry)... :wink: . So if anyone can think of any other spots that you might zoom past on your way out to the kish or some other spot please let me know.....

It's looking like we might get some slack winds early next week for a few days, so it looks like I might give it a bash then....

You could also try the Frazer Bank out of Killiney Bay.

Frazer bank does produce on occasion but to be honest its like compering chalk with cheese if your going to travel down the coast for the extra half hour it would not be worth your while stopping off at killiney.

You could launch off the south beach in Greystones and go straight out to the Mulditch buoy

yep have heard the mulditch buoy aint fishing bad this year the spot i go to might be a bit far for you but ill pm gps location if ya like :lol: :lol: ill tow you if i see ya out there

Cheers DB.... I will have a GPS with me so if you could PM me any spots I would appreciate it... The aul porta isn't too bad..... Once conditions are ok, 1 mile out shouldn't be a problem. Looks like we might get some settled light westery winds next Tuesday onwards... Hopefully I'll give it a try then. Is there a praticular time of the tide that fished better for the Tope out there :?:

if you want to catch big tope now get yourself down to killiney bay about 400 yards from the shore at the tea rooms.i have got them every year for the last four years.last year we got an record estimated tope of around 70 odd lb ,there are still macks about for fresh bait but i would rather fresh whiting or small dabs

I've fished for them a lot this year in the boat.If you are in Meath I would suggest Portrane.Launch at the slip and head for Lambay when you are in 25 - 30ft water directly facing the Hospital in portrane...You are in the spot.There is a reef there which a Lobster man in Howth put me onto. I've had Tope to 34lbs there this year and there have been Some up to 60lbs.
If the fishing is poor there you could go around to the Estuary in Rogerstown and freeline some sandeel for Seatrout and Bass !!!

Oh I forgot to mention the best time to fish for them is from slack water up !!

Killiney might be worth a bash as I will be close to the shore... I will be fishing in a 12 foot open boat, so anything further out might be pushing it, except for flat calm days... Might be tempted this weekend, especially if there are still a few mack about.... Thanks very much for the info Paul.

If you wanted to stay in close I would suggest Ballygannon..They are being caught at the mo. from the Shore at night :o :o

the right of way in portrane for the slip way is blocked of to the public you would have to launch your boat from rush yacht club.hope you catch where ever you go :) if you can use light gear you'll have great crack :!:

I've been watching the weather Eric.... I'm looking for some nice light Westerlies and I'd be up for it for sure.... Given that it's a light open boat the light winds are a must.

Might be looking good for Sunday, especially the morning. I'll have to check the tides...

Doesn't matter much with this boat Brian, as it is very light. Once I can park within 50 meters of the beach I can launch from anywhere. :D I just carry it.

You drive down to the golf course in Greystones..you will see a right of way just before the river walk down there onto beach..There are massive boulders along the beach now..walk up to second river and your in Ballygannon !!!
