Hi all
Would a 5 or 6 hp 4stroke engine be suitable as an auxiliary for a 14 - 16 foot fiberglass boat?
Cheers

Adam,
I just bought a new 4 HP aux for the Sea Hog - it's 17ft - I asked the seller about buying a 6HP, he said there was no point , a 4 was plenty. Nice of him as he could have made a couple of hundred extra on the 6HP. Most boats I've seen seem to go for the 4hp - some bigger than 17ft.

Hi Adam,
I'd say a 5hp will be fine. If you'd like to give a 5 a try to see how it pushed the boat give me a bell and I will drop my 5hp Tohatsu over to you.

5hp was fine for a 17foot boat with 50hp engine and a couple of people, so if your boat is smaller you could go a bit smaller for the spare maybe

Does the 4hp float better than the 6hp?
Sorry, couldn't resist.
No, we'll never let you forget it. :P

Adam you don't say what make/type of boat it is? I have a 16ft orkney and I use an 8hp as the main engine and she motors along perfectly. If you've got a similar boat then 4hp is more than adequate.

hi pete
we havent bought one yet, but yes what we go for should be similar to yours. so the 4 should be grand then, thanks

T'rat, I never had a 6HP, it was a Riptide 40lb thrust electric - I doubt it makes any difference to "floatability" though !
