Inshore/Offshore

An interesting question.

Down this neck of the woods I would class anything 10 to 15miles (within good sight of land) to be inshore, beyond sight of land I would class as offshore. That is my personal classification and it may not be technically correct.

Technically I reckon that where the bottom has an effect on wave motion is inshore. Consequentially where the bottom no longer has effect on wave motion is offshore.

inshore for insurance purposes is within 11 miles of the shore

For commercial fishing / shipping it is officially 12 nm! Offshore is up to 200 nm, and greater than 200 nm becomes international waters ( there are some exceptions to the INT waters law where there is not 200 nm between nations etc )

But for sea angling purposes in Ireland it is no more than 3 nm "to sea".
