Hiring an Angling charter Boat in S Ireland

Hi All,

Here is the D.O.T's latest list of licensed passenger boats together with the boats current plying limits.

It is important that you check the plying limits of any boat that you may be considering to hire as outside of the plying limits you will not be covered by the boats insurance and also risk that the boat may be arrested and brought ashore by the naval service. ( Boats were checked here out of Cork Harbour a few times over the past 2 seasons, all found to be within their limits).

A "P3" licensed boat's maximum plying limits are 15 miles from point of departure and never more than 3 miles from land "to sea" several angling charter boats in Ireland are in this category.

Jim / Admin,

I think it would be a good idea to include the name of the boat on the Charter Boat Details page of this site. Then potential anglers could check before choosing. As it stands now it is difficult.

I glanced at a couple and I find one very obvious omission in my locality and I don't for one minute think he would be operating without a licence. The only thing I can think of is that there is some ambiguity with the name of the boat.

Hi Arthur,

The DOT have a note on the list pointing out that there may be some omissions. That is always the case as new licences will have been issued since the list was updated and they just forget to add others details Any boat owner omitted should contact them and they will correct the list.

This list is the official list with the correct plying limits! If a boat you hire is not on the list you need to confirm it is licensed and the plying limits are not being breached when you hire it!

Any second-hand or even a brand new boat "not built under their supervision"boat that is brought in from the North or UK etc will only have a "P3" Therefore some really excellent boats have this limit so it is important that you check the official list or ask to see the boats license just for your own peace of mind!

A "P3" licensed vessel can never go more than 3 miles from land so if a P3 takes you out sharking or to an offshore wreck and something goes wrong you may find you have no insurance cover.
