Hello,
I am originally from Austria, therefore have never been at the sea (for fishing) before.
I would like to try out sea fishing. I decided to go over to cork for that.
How much should a day trip on a decent boat cost approximately?
What kind of stuff do i need to bring, when I rent the rod? (Baits, other tackle?!, rubber boots?!)
All the best

Price can vary but for a full compliment of 10 anglers, you should expect to pay around 400-500 EUR, ie. around 50 EUR each. Generally it is better to fish in a smaller group, say 8 persons, for comfort.
You can hire the boat rods and equipment from most skippers, although you might want to bring some tackle with you... best to email the skipper and/or talk to them to see what species are available when you are here.

there is nothing more miserable than being wet all day, so definately waterproof boots and clothing. Even on a fine day it will be a lot colder out there and spray will be flying about.
bring some lunch and drinks. If you might be prone to sea sickness, get some pills from a chemist. You are also much more likely ot get sunburnt due to reflections from the water.
i guess the best tackle to start with would be a few setts of hookai lures. Get a tray of ragworm from a tackle shop and a fresh mackerel from the supermarket to bait them with. 8oz leads will probably be about right. Attach with paperclip so if it gets stuck the leaad only will be lost

Unfortunately I am not in a group of 10 people. (I am alone). I know that skippers would put me together with a group of other people. How much would this cost on average?
(The cheapest offer I got was 60 €, then 80 and then 400 for a complete boat, exclusive tackle.) If I got an offer for, lets say 30 €...would this most likely be some "minor quality" boat? What is a usual price for 8 hours on a boat (sharing with others)?
How are these heavy spoons called, you use for cod fishing (for normal fishing 80g -200g, for light fishing as little as 35 g and for heavy deap sea fishing up to 1000g. They are NOT normal leads, they look like a fish, and have a triple hooks attached. (I am looking for the term, as my dictionary wount translate the german term "Pilker")
Thanks,
Willi

Hi Willi,
Unfortunately very few boats can cater for individual anglers, the reason for this is that on the day in question you may find you are the only one of the group to show up or you will end up waiting for the others for over an hour basically it is too much grief. Also a lot of smaller groups do not want to share the boat etc.
Think of a charter boat as you would a hackney cab it is the same price for 1 as it is for 4 in the cab so it is up to you to fill the cab same goes for the boat. When you pay the skipper that quoted you €60 he will deduct that from the other group that are willing to share.
I send most of my individuals or very small groups to Peter & Barry Twomey in Crosshaven they are in the best position to place you as they will have at least one boat out each day regardless of the numbers due to contractual conditions with the hotel.
This is there website tell them I sent you :

Hi,
I've been out on Sunday May 6th with the Chieftain. It was a blast. We had wind force 5 or 6. Thanks for the tip concerning anti-sickness pills. They worked great for me, while 2 other members from 9 members on board got sick.
I caught some macro, 3-4 cod, some pollack and a sea bass.
2 guys caught cod with little below 20 and 21 pound. Some big fish with amazingly big head!
The tackle was all supplied by the skipper, as well as sinkers and leaders.
Thanks to Mark, who gave me a lot of tipps, wrote e-mails back and forth with me and even gave me a lift up to cork!
The fishing came pretty natural to me - somehow just like jig-fishing for perch, but with much heavier leads... However the Right handed multi-reels were a bit strange and uncomfortable to use..... Dan would have had a spinning reel as well, but I just had to try the mulits out...
Thanks to all of you for your tipps,
Will
