I think it's mostly down to thinking about it. I reckon most people will get sick in their first few trips out, and after that they think about it when going on subsequent trips. I found that if I drove to the pier, rather than getting there as a passenger, I wasn't sick as I was concentrating on driving and then straight out when we arrived there. Saying that, I still go prepared. I wear wrist bands, I drink ginger ale (the real stuff , not the clear stuff), I eat ginger biscuits, and I take stemitil. I don't get sick now, but am afraid to cut any of the above out as I don't know which one prevents the sickness, or maybe it's the combination of them all.

try the wrist bands mate, something to do with the pressure points in your body, i no people who would never dream about flying or travelling by sea until they tried these, small bands that go around your wrist with a little metal pad on them, apparently they work well

I suffer terribly from sea sickness, and I know how you feel. The only thing that has consistantly worked for me is Stugeron, but it is crucial to take it properly.
Take one tablet the night before you are going out, when you go to bed.
(before midnight and not after a gallon, and an assualt on a chip van in the early hours....)
next morning have a breakfast of ceral and toast, tea/coffee NO ORANGE JUICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
then take a second tablet no later than 1 hour before you step on to the boat.
If you follow these instructions to the letter you will not get sick. if you deviate from them, even a little bit, you will throw up.

Hi guys this is an interesting post. I started boat fishing when I was 12 and stopped when I was about 16 (im 30 now) I was never sick in the first couple of years that I went out. By the time I got to 16 or so I was sick quite often, I put it down to the fact that the younger I was the more time I spent messing about on boats that where tied up at the pier. I literally spent days on end fishing and messing about on the boats tied up at the piers of Moville and Greencastle. I also remember that one waft of Desil fumes and I'd be chucking all day!

Im gonna get back out boat fishing this summer so, Ive been interseted in all your prevention methods!

I have suffered this horrible sickness on ferries charter boats and while crewing a tallship in OZ, but the funny thing is it never affected me while I was sailing. Don't know if it the engine or the fact that while sailing you have so many jobs to do there is no time to get sick. One thing for sure even the smalest quantity of beer the night before and I am F##ked. I used to get car sick as a child but not now so these things settle themselves after time I recon

Afunny thing is when I was working on the tall ship I was sick for a day at the begining and after a few weeks at sea we anchored of Heron Island and when I got ashore I started to get LAND sick.
