You were keeping all the ray you caught for the pan? How many did you catch?

My wife loves ray and was rather shocked when she saw the photos of one of our trips to the west last year and wondered where all the ray went!
gonna have to keep one or two this year!!!

I Dont eat them neither does anyone I know and I'm a Dub, This sort of thing is why we get a bad name and also why there are so little Ray on the east coast

personally love eating ray over any fish, and will definitely keep a few myself,

My sport is fishing, which involves catching fish on hooks, sometimes killing and eating them, why would this give anyone a bad name?
Claiming that because we do this is the reason why, in your opinion, there are so few ray on the East coast might just give us a bad name.
In answer to your question eire32 I do like ray and so do a lot of my friends so will take a few if I am lucky enough to get them big enough.

I fish out of dublin and have no problem catching ray,and would always keep one to eat the older generation love them,my father in law eats the "bones of a ray" and my mother loves a "long ray with a hump" so there is nothing wrong with keeping some for the pan

I'd have no problem keeping one or two. I'm not sure what happened on the charter the OP was on, but if he kept all the ray he caught it may not have gone down too well.

hi mate... i to am from dublin and i love eaten ray like you say it is more of a dublin thing than anywhere else... sorry to affend others but i would rather catch and eat ray myself... on the other hand what about all the trawler boat in the west that catch ray and then just dump them.. i have seen this first hand,,, it is not the single angler that does any damage to the stocks.... i have seen huge blone ray ,, thornback ray just left in the bins of boats in roundstone, cleggan,, and most fishing piers in the west.....so in my opinio if you want to catch to eat carry on .........

not gone on the taste of ray myself, but ive mates from dublin living down here in mayo, they love them, and i'd bring the odd one home for them, and eire32 i bet all the others brought home pollock or other "edible species"from the trip,so you fire away eating a fish you enjoy and never mind the knockers!...but if you kill ALL the fish you catch, you will get the "cold shoulder" from anglers that would be conservation minded.

I personally wouldn't have a problem keeping a ray to eat. I've seen them being sold in the supermarket and the flesh looks lovely and think I would be tempted some day provided I found out how to cook them. If the fish are being kept to eat then whats the problem? It's the commercial boys which are destroying the sea.

Shocked that some one would give the cold shoulder. I and all the other regular anglers in the Shannon Estuary love nothing more that to hear of Dublin anglers filling up buckets with ray wings.

This probably sounds like a total rookie question but here goes

I take it to kill a ray you just hit it between the eyes? It doesn't have a head like a normal fish and I would not be in favour of leaving fish to sufficate..
Wed Apr 21, 2010 6:48 pm
plenty of ray all along the east coast, i do keep my fair share of them, i just love eating them. last year i also killed a very deep hooked spurdog and eaten it beautiful fish to eat, but i would not kill one to eat unless it was badly damaged.
i might kill a smoothound this year to see if they are alike
as for killing ray i like to put a knife into there head a couple of times to dispatch them it works very quickly for me
