Battery

Hi guys. Just bought a boat with old Yamaha 40hp 2 stroke electric start outboard. What a kind of battery i need to use for start, lights and fishfinder/gps unit?

Have the same engine and just got a 110amp leisure battery a few weeks ago and its spot on

Leisure batteries are good.
If in doubt use something like an "068" car battery. Go for as big Ah rating as you can in terms of space available, weight etc.

Car battery is ok to get you out of a hole id an 065 in mine for few weeks but would recommend it as they run down fairly quick as nothings keeping them charged

Id recommend a leisure battery as the slow cycle in them are more reliable an will last alot longer, no harm to have a cheap multimeter aswell as you can keep a check on it

Nothing's keeping them charged? Surely the engine is keeping them charged. There is nothing draining them when not in use and fitted with an isolator.

Yeah to an extent jim iv had it happen me and said it to friends who have boats an they told me the bouncing around is what drained mine so i bought a leisure battery and iv no problems since,im giving my experience its upto him if he wants to buy a car or leisure battery

lead acid batteries do discharge internally even if not connected, ive have heard an approximation
of 1% per day, if you look around any marina most of the boats will have
some kind of solar panel or wind generator to counteract this and thats using proper
deep cycle batteries

I have a gel battery in ours and it's fairly decent one you keep it stored correctly
