serving out boards

Hi Lads
Just wondering is there anything apart from fresh water that you put through your outboard when you are giving it a service?

I normally just flushed with fresh water for a bit and if I was laying it up for a while I removed the cup and filter from the carb and drained out the fuel, washed out the filter. I found that if the engine was left for long periods that the petrol in the bowl evaporated and left the oil a congealed mess which jammed up the float and had it pissing petrol all over the show the next time it was run up.

Also, if laying up for a bit, drain and wash out the fuel tank. Remember to wash it out with petrol before next use.

Also, check the anode(s), if seriously pitted, replace.

And the plugs are best cleaned when laying up, before the gunk really hardens on them.

It's also worth pulling the inspection plug on the gearbox. If the oil appears milky and emulsified, flush out and replace with fresh gear oil.

Apart from that, just grease up the throttle and gear linkages and the tilt mechanism.
