Outboard Engine

It looks like the outboard engine on our Fastliner has seen it's last days. If we have to replace it we will be looking at 50/60hp 2/4 strokes.

Can anybody recomend a dealer here or in the UK where we are likely to find a decent 2nd hand engine or get a good deal on a new engine?

We've been looking at Tohatsu 2 stroke new engines which seem to be competitively priced. What do people think?

I would not start recommending dealers personally as every dealer has its good and bad points, I would suggest however you take a look at

I have used Carrickt Craft and Marine Parts Direct and both like I have said have good and bad points. Its a personal choice if you ask me 8)

have you considered a selvathey do both 4stroke and the new 2strokes and are much cheaper than the main stream engines dont know about the 4st and the new 2st but the old type 2st were basically yamahas.
50hpELPTMA old style 2st = £2900+vat
50hpELPT 4st = £3880+vat
50hpELPTMA 2st LPDI = £3725=vat
btw. the LPDI is cheaper to run than a 4st

Within the next year or so you will see the manufacturers ceasing to produce 2 stroke engines to conform to european directives and ommisions, so a 4stroke will have a better residual value in the long run

4 stroke is the way to go. changed from 40 mariner 2 stroke to yamaha 30 4 stroke on my fastliner 19-uses less than 1/2 the fuel and still pushes the boat at 17kts.

4st are much heavier than 2st, more expensive to maintain, more complicated to fix.
the new DI 2st are lighter and even cheaper to run than 4st still complicated to fix though!
typical weights for 50hp:-
2stDI=100kg
2st=75kg
4st=110kg
typical fuel consumption:-
2stDI=12L/h
2st=20L/h
4st=16L/h

The Orkney Fastliner we have is (I think...) of O Sullivan Marine origin.

Do you think it would take a 60hp 4Stroke? Weight is approx 120kg
I've seen one that is well priced but I'm wondering if it would make an Orkney Fastliner squat in the water.

When buying an outboard for any boat, is is quite dangerous for a number of reasons to overweigh or overpower the boat - or indeed to fit an engine with too short and especially too long a shaft - causes all sorts of stability and handling problems. You'd be best consulting the boat manufacturer to ask them as they will have the specs to say what the maximum power & weight ought to be.

Is it 16ft or 19ft fastliner. Ours is 19ft and takes up to 60hp I think. There is a plate near the stern seating which gives weights etc, engine size and max speed which is 22kts for the 19 fastliner.

We are looking at a Mercury ELPTO 60 2 stroke. Does anybody know this engine and how it performs?

We want to go 60 but a 4 stroke 60 is out of our financial range hence the 2 stroke.

Used to have Mariner 40hp 2 stroke on our 19ft fastliner and she made the max 22kts so maybe no point in spending the extra for a 60hp. As I said we now have a 30 4 stroke and it uses about 1/2 the fuel the 2 stroke did with only a loss of 4kts off top speed but the boat runs nicely at around 14kts with little slamming.

We have the chance of getting an extremly good deal on a Mariner 60hp 4 stroke which weighs in at 113kg. I spoke to Orkney and they said the max weight they would recomend on the boat would be 95kg. However I spoke to a guy who has a 60 Mariner 4stroke on his boat and he said performance was fine.

I'm tempted to go with the 60 4 stroke as it would go onto the next boat we have in mind a year or 2 down the road.

Has anybody else ever gone for a 60 on their fastliner or been on one and if so have you any views on the performance? Was the bow very high up when under way?

The power tilt/trim should sort out trim angles. If really bad you could always fit trim tabs-manual ones shouldnt be too dear.

prop selection is importantant too, most 60 O/Bs the default prop is aimed at the speed boat market and is there fore totally unsuitable for the semidisplacement boats like fastliners, you can down load a prop calculator - you enter type of hull, weight, length, engine size, gear ratios and max revs and it tells you the best diameter and pitch.
