Guys, how does one determine the rating and/or maximum towing capacity of a towbar

I've got a Thule detachable fitted on a VW Touareg.

the tow bar should be able for anything that is legal to hitch up to the car
what are you planning on towing with it

tow bars are rated in tons of downward pressure , a lot of builders with big jeeps would have 3.5 ton hitch. but if u do not have tralier marked on your drivers licince , your insurance will not cover u to pull any bigger then a dog box

on a standard car licence you are allowed to tow up to 750kg.

I'v got my EB and EC1 licence so thats not really a problem. My question is with the towbar itself and what it can handle. Are there different ratings clasifications and capacities for different types

Thule hitch for a vw toureg is rated for 3500kg and vertical loaf of 140kg
your jeep is rated for 3500kg towing capacity buy vw
it should have no problem towing a 175 once you have a braked trailer.
