A name for the boat or how to put it on

Guys,
Any tips on how to stick/paint a name on the boat or the right/wrong way to go about it? The boat I have is an orkney.

If your orkney is second hand, and has a name already, tradition is that its bad luck to change the name... just in case you mention it to a local sailor crewman etc. and wonder why they don't want to go fishing with you :wink:

decide on a name, grab a computer and printer, generate stencils for the letters required ot the size required. Print and cut out with a craft knife (you have to be careful with any letter that has an intenal space like "e" or "b" and leava a few small thin strips connecting these bits to the main section).

A further step if you are being particularly careful is to then transfer these stencils to old lino (ideal for spray painting onto a curved surface so long as it still has a bit of give in it).

Make sure not to have the letters upside down or back to front (easy to do, just look at your local petrol stations big price signage)...

I used metallic car paint and a spray gun borrowed from the local crash repair shop and made sure to degrease, buff and dry the section to be painted. Tape the stencil in place on a windless day, with lots of newspaper to protect the rest of the boat (and trailer) and off you go... not too thick. Better to do two coats thin than have to deal with runs...

Goggles and a mask are a good idea for your own safety.

There's probably a more modern/scientific/foorproof method now...

But it is acceptable to change the name of a boat, as long as you still have the origional name somewhere else aboard it. So, make yourself up a little wood plaque with the origional name and keep it somewhere in the cuddy.

Funny, when I was thinking about trying to paint a name on it I was wondering how Luke manage to fit 'Dirty Fecker' on one side of the boat or did he do 'Fecker' on one side and 'Dirty' on the other :lol:

No worries bout original name as she wasn't christened by the last owner. Gotta think of a bloody name now!

It is much better to use transfers for puting on the name unless you are having it done profseionally. I got the stickers from the 'Bass Pro Shop' in Florida. You get four of each letter in each pack. I bought two new packs this year and must get two 'Dirty Fecker II's (one for each side out of these. Another boater has asked me for some letters and he must get two 'Mostly Harmless' out of these. I have the origional sets left overs from two sets of 'Dirty fecker' left from the first boat. After that if your name can be made from whats left you are welcome to them... :? :? :?

If you paint it on you are stuck with the results... Later trying to sell the boat, the boat is forever scarred with the results. Always with boats it is better to find ways to do things that do not directly affect the fibreglass as this is permenent and while this can be fixed it never looks brand new again... Your choice. My boat has a certain amount of wood involved and where possible i make changes there. I have recently added a rod rack arrangement and rod holders to the back and chose to mount them on the Enginewell hood as this is constructed from wood. This way the boat is compromised as little as possible. What you do is your own business. Its your boat! Thats only my opinion. :wink:

Mine is painted on a rectangular piece of aluminium which is fixed to the side of the cockpit, good idea if you have a way of fixing it on without drilling the GRP.
As for picking a name, you could try the porn star approach :shock: First pets name followed by your mothers maiden name :lol: Never know might work out e.g Lucky O' Donnell :) , Rusty O' Toole :shock: (I'll stop now before this gets out of hand). If that doesn't work do a search on google for "boat name suggestions", but best to try the multiple word approach as you have a better chance of coming up with something original :wink:
