Madeira

Had a week of holiday in Madeira end of Jan. Fished from the jetty in Funchal. Caught nothing (the fish were expert at bait stealing) but watching the locals was an education. Most catches were very small fish which were thrown into a bag or bucket without being killed. In the warm climate there always seemed to be peopls fishing. I saw nothing thrown back. Is this what happens with high fishing pressure and no controls?

Funchal

Hi Alan

In some lands, small fish are eaten either as whitebait in a stew or BBQ but equally many are used, especially live in a bucket, as bait for bigger toothier prey typically involving a wire trace and large hook!

Funchal has a fairly strong and established charter fleet AFAIK...

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
