Puerto de Santiago/Tenerife Jan 2014

As a pressie for my wife's 40th birthday our eldest daughter paid for a week away for both of us in Tenerife 
.
Managed to get in a couple of sessions in on a small pier in the resort we stayed in.
First day I fished the mark i had one of the usual suspects, a few Blue Spotted Damsel fish.
Before we packed up and headed to dinner the wife spotted a Sting Ray basking at the surface around 30 yards from the pier, so I returned the following evening armed with some nice fresh joey mackerel and fresh tiger shrimp.
Sent the joey out on a pulley rig using 50 lb braid and 50 lb shockleader, put the smaller rod out with a single hook flapper and a full shrimp. Five minutes later the rod with the shrimp gave a good thump and I land a small Moray around 3 lb or so. With no sign of a bit of the bigger rod I was contemplating reeling it in when the rod doubled over, I picked up the rod and loosened the drag a little more,,of the fish went, tightened up the drag and no sign of the fish stopping. I then began to use my hand on the spool to control the drag, the fish gave one massive dive and "crack" line snapped. Either had to be a good size Stinger or an Angel shark, either way Gearwise I was totally unprepared for that sort of fish.
Returned the following evening to find 3 well placed buoys (something I've seen locals do in France and here on the West coast in ferriters cove) placed right where I was casting to the previous night. Put out a few big baits but every one of them got snagged and gear lost (no doubt a network of ropes strung between the bouys). And sure who can blame them, when it comes to conservation if the authorities are willing to do feck all about it, the locals do their way.
So it was back to float fishing for the other couple of short sessions I put in.
I had a couple of Bogue fish, puffer fish, 1 Ornate Wrasse and a nice little White Bream.
Tiger prawns were the best bait by far.
All in all a most enjoyable break, plenty of good food and wine, a few nice fish, and proof that there are some very big fish to be caught from the shore in the Canary islands.

Nice fishing. Would be inclined to think that the big fish was a stingray.

Probably just as well the braid snapped Skell, or I mighta ended up water skiing
