Norway Halibut Advice Please!

Wed Jan 22, 2014 10:24 pm

so i am planning a trip to Norway next year to target halibut 8) but my fishing buddy, who will go with me, and who is a feckin globe-trotting fishing fanatic (he has caught some serious big fish!), will only go there if he is pretty much guaranteed at least a 80lb (preferably over 100lb) fish... - otherwise, he says that we should go to Alaska instead
now, dont get me wrong, Alaska would be fantastic, but its just that i have my heart set somewhat on Norway..
I know some people on here have been there before and might have a good idea on where to suggest i could consider going to in Norway? somewhere specifically that regularly produces big fish??
any advice or pointers greatly appreciated
cheers

Filet of coalfish for bait, whipped onto your pirk's trebles and left ledgered on the bottom.

Didn't work for me, but I saw my mate catch with this. That was in Koppangen.

thanks for that Tanglerat. But Koppangen seems hundreds of miles form the shore?! did you stay there? where did yous fish out of and what weight was your friend's fish??

I have found places where halibut are pretty much guaranteed but i need BIG halibut to be guaranteed..

I need specifics on location (and maybe season too). And I need evidence that big fish are caught regularly at this location!

Cheers!

Have been to northern Norway 5 or 6 times to three different locations, the best fishing I have had was at Loppa-Sandland,We had plenty of Halibut but in my experience the average size would be between 14 and 30 pounds ,the biggest Ihave seen landed was 35 kg which was caught on a large shad in shallow water.I dont think you would be certain to get a fish of 80 to 100 lbs during any particular trip but would Alaska guarantee a fish of that size.

The halibut were only wee, though.

apologies Tanglerat, i seem to have inadvertently clicked on a place called Koppang, not Koppangen  dear dear
so ok i have found where it is then but unfortunately it doesnt seem to be too appealing if the halibut werent big - they would probably have suited me, but not my buddy..
great looking place all the same, thanks for the links

Sandland-Loppa was indeed a destination that i was pretty interested in Brian, thanks for the response 8)
its disappointing though that yous didnt hit into any bigger halibut. mind you, 35kg would do it for me!
do you think that there may be a better/berst season for the bigger halibut there..?

i simply dont know if there is any particular location anywhere in Norway (to include a more favoured season/month) that has a good chance of producing 80 - 100lb+ fish. i obviously need to look into it more. No harm in pushing it here though too.. for some first-hand advice if i can get it
as for Alaska, my friend insists that the halibut are bigger on average over there ..in the right places, apparently

cheers

Another vote for Sandland - Loppa.

We had 60+ Halibut in a week there. All on shads. Similar average size to Brians. Best fish 80 odd pounds.

Think they reckon August is the best time for bigger fish. We fished in May.

Cheers Seaniebo, appreciated

Thats a pretty decent result, were you specifically targeting the halibut.?

and yeah, i reckon i heard that July and August might be best then. damn, i was wishing to go in May myself too.

thanks for the response :)

No bother.

Yeah we got kind of bored of cod within the first day so just went after halibut. The shads seemed to pick out the better cod too. Any amount of 30lb fish, a nice few 40lb and the biggest cod of our trip at 56lb.
