Bass laws

After looking through thepersonnel gallery. I'd like to remind those new to the forum that these are the laws relating to bass and there are very few on it that tolerate them being broken:

* A bag limit of 2 bass per angler in any one 24hr period.
* An overall size limit of 40cm (tip of snout to end of tail), where all smaller fish are returned alive.
* A closed season from 15 May to 15 June.
* Sale or offer for sale of bass (other than bass which has been imported into the State) prohibited.

might be worth putting this on the main page of the site considering how much coverage Bass get in debates on the forums?

you can tell people all you want but it wont change them.people that keep more then two and sell bass will still keep doing it,they just might not post up there pics.the laws have to be in forced on the beaches and fish shops stopped from buying them.

Many people are just ignorant of the law. There are signs on the waterford marks down where you are but I haven't seen any on the clare marks and many of the kerry marks don't have them. To say every one who is told the law will ignore it just isn't true. Many visitors and first time anglers will need to be told the laws so they can obey them.

Various things i've seen and encountered down the years has brought me to the conclusion that there are two types of angler, both fresh and saltwater:

- Those with an appreciation for nature and wildlife, and who respect the environment from which they derive countless hours of pleasure.

- Those who couldn't give a flying f***.

The first type will generally adhere to any laws in place, handle their catch with care and release the vast majority unharmed, bring their rubbish home with them and play an active role in trying to educate others of the importance of such behaviour.

The second type show complete contempt for everything and everyone, are often full drunk, leave bags of dead fish lying on the shore to rot and have the place strewn in litter.

If someone has already fallen into type two, then as Barry says - you can talk to them until you are blue in the face but you are wasting their time as they will never change.

Not only that, but sometimes tackling people about their behaviour can even compromise your own safety.

It's not just a fishing thing, I suppose it's true in all walks of life. Some people have a certain mentality that selfishly ruins everything for everyone else.

well put shamrock - was fishing a lakeside at the weekend and it was destroyed in rubbish - suppose you can only keep trying to educate :?

Can a moderator answer if it can go on the main page or not? Like most Bass posts on here everyone will give an opinion ( as you are entitled to do) and they the rows start and 2 days later when all the steam has been let off it's over with ( not in all cases admittedly). So before this happens I just want to know if the Bass Laws info can be put on the main site!

While we are discussing Bass size and take home size why is there no maximum size limit for take home. If Bass start to breed after 6/7 years what age is a 43 Cm Bass, surely that must be close to breeding age, and if they are starting to breed then why are we taking stock that is only starting to reproduce. If fish go on breeding for 15 years then most of us are taking fish that are in their prime. I think the limit for take home should be something like 43 cms to 50/55 Cms and all others returned. If we are serious about conservation we need an upper limit.

very true imagine all the big fish killed on the beaches every year if they where left to spawn there be a lot more schoolie bass witch are the ones that be best taken for eating.
why is it just laws on bass there should be a 2 fish max on all fish(cod,flounder,plaice,whiting........)

in sea angler this month there is a picture of an angler with 5 dead bass, is there no catch limit in the UK or laws that protect the bass?
What about other fish is there no laws to protect them? such important fish such as cod and rays should also have catch limits, they are plans to turn tope into a sport fish, which you can fish for by using c+r methods, is any such plans for Irish fish?
