I am fairly sure it is legal Steve.....and they could be netting the area. i only counted about 7 fish and I'm sure that there was only about 20 on the whole line.

Still not a good thing to see....and I'm sure gulls do get caught and drowned regularly

The issue of longlines came up at the Bass meeting yesterday. I'm not a lawyer, but my own opinion is that if you caught three Bass and all three were dead you would be breaking the law. The exact wording is:

prohibited to take and kill or have in possession

So, for Bass, regardless of whether you take them home, if you kill them you would seem to have infringed.

Unfortunately it's such a grey area, prosecutions are unlikely.

It is not to long ago 15 / 20years or so that it used to be done on some of the beaches in dublin.the main target were bass and the bycatch was mainly flounder and the odd plaice /dog/and dab.

If it isn't illegal than the laws need to be changed.
The other point is that if you fish that beach you could lose a lot of tackle getting snagged on that 100 ft of rope!
All fishermen are liars except you and me and to tell you the truth, I'm not so sure about you!

It isn't angling, its a hunter gatherer method of fishing. What is illegal about it?

Nothing, AFAIK. But as far as I know, harpooning isn't illegal either. But the end result may be illegal.

It's a method of fishing by which you can't control whether or not you break the law. Like deliberately driving a car in which you have no control over the speed.

ok... put it this way... would you be happy to see it happen on one of your local beaches..
i know of a few beaches that it has been done to and it really effects the fishing in the area.. and they are not short term effects either...

fish

Postby barry murphy » Mon Jan 29, 2007 7:34 pm

hi lads any know where it was?it would piss you off seen that ,same as lads fishing close to shore with nets, look at the bay in tramore not a ray left in it. but as far as laws go they are not doing anything wrong.i seen two lads pulling a net in the channel in the backstrand in tramore taken 20 mullet a time and probably bass as well as i was a bit away from me.and when i rang bailiffs i was told unless they where targeting bass their hands were tied.

That's a different question. (In reference to SteveCrows last post) I simply asked what is illegal about this method? . . . if you are sure yourself that it is not legal?

I did not say I approved of it or would like to see it done locally.

A famous English sea food chef illustrated its use on prime time TV last year off the coast of Cornwall . . . its legal in that country it would appear.

I've recently seen ready made gear for this venture in a certain east coast tackle shop. Gilaroo is right - it's not illegal, its just another way of catching fish that is not in key with angling. It certainly isn't sporting but neither is a six ounce leads pulling a 2 ounce whiting.

Isn't that Michael Viney, who writes "Another Life " for the Irish Times?

He actually mentioned SAI in one of his articles!

there are anglers out take home everything they catch its not just netters or liners who need a lesson in conservation.

From what I remember, he said he does it occasionally for family use.
To be fair, he lives a fairly frugal existance, so his "environmental footprint" would be quite small.

a few fish for the pot

Postby jw » Tue Jan 30, 2007 5:58 pm

all these debates over leisure anglers releasing fish don't make any sense to me.
I've already posted a link to the central statistics office. In 2002, 2500 tonnes of skate and ray were landed. If a man desides to catch a couple of fish for the pot, it's not going to have any effect at all.
