Mackerel fishing begins next week

Fishermen will be allowed to start catching mackerel from next week, three weeks later than they are normally given permission to do so.

The European Fisheries Commission forced the late start to the opening of the season because of illegal landings by Irish boats.

The mackerel industry is estimated to be worth more than €60 million to Irish fishermen every year.

Fishing industry leaders say the delay has been causing serious financial hardship for Killybegs, the main mackerel landing port.

The Minister for the Marine, Noel Dempsey and the Minister of State, John Browne, have been lobbying on behalf of the industry in Brussels.

they should be lobbying for 1 mile limits and the like! :x :evil: :roll:

Was this delay not caused by the fact that Killybegs trawlers illegally landed 45000 tonnes, yes 45000 tonnes of mackeral in Scotland in 2005?
Illegal fishing is just that - illegal. We should be lobbying for the full weight of the law to come down upon the perpetrators of these crimes.

I wonder what happens if they catch Mackeral 'by accident' like they catch Bass 'by accident' do they have to throw them back? or is it just considered by catch.
