Where all the mackerel went.

Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:38 am

A lot of people were wondering at the lack of mackerel in recent years, well here's one reason.

Just goes to show how much notice they take of limits.

and some Irish trawlers have the cheek to blame foreigners

Sun Jan 21, 2007 6:15 pm

They should take the licences off the trawler owners who are involved in any illegal activity.

Sun Jan 21, 2007 7:27 pm

he wont have far to go then ,killeybegs !!the trawlers there have been landing illegally for years .only for the harbour master talking probably never been found out,but have we heard what happened about this???

Sun Jan 21, 2007 7:44 pm

Plenty about it on the SACN site. The 4 who were on charges had their case adjourned for the second time the last day....

According to the DCMNR, about 3/4 of the 23 pelagic boats were involved in the landings - I wonder why more people haven't been charged...

Sun Jan 21, 2007 8:44 pm

so if 3/4 of the boats are guilty of it - the govt are representing the majority which are guilty - they are hardly going to bite off the hand that feeds them in this respect

roll on total allowable by-catch

By-catch is bad enough but 40,000 tonnes of mackerel by-catch is pushing credibility to breaking limits.

there has been plenty examples of other ridiculus - "surely they wont" kinda thing over the years

i see this scapegoated and fudged back into nothing in the overall agenda

Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:45 am

What do they have to do before action will be taken against them. If it were Spanish or French trawlers the Irish fishing industry would be screaming for action over the plundering of our waters.

Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:54 am

dont know - there seems to be general indifference from the public - its not being reflected in the price of fish - as the farmed stuff is so cheap in comparison and then you have all the factory fish frozen stuff

so effectively its an in house management thing - with the odd trade off to europe

Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:37 am

It's ridicules! If you get caught shoplifting something for a fiver you get prosecuted, if you get caught as part of a ring illegally selling 48 million Euros worth of illegally caught fish you don't even lose your licence, let alone face prosecution. What a farce!

Will be interesting to see if they really apply the quota reduction to the vessels that were allegedly involved in the illegal langings. I guess quotas, certainly for larger vessels, are a matter of public record, so it might be worth following up on this ...

Wed Jan 24, 2007 1:23 am

Call me a cynic, but I can't see it. Ireland has been given its quota and will fill it. I see the skippers having a valid point in that until they're actually convicted in a court of law, they are innocent and as such cannot be penalised or discriminated against.

So far, charges have been brought against four of the '3/4 of the 23 pelagic fishing vessels', that case has been adjourned twice and won't be over any time soon. As far as I can see, the remaining offenders have not even been charged.

Mssrs Dempsey & Browne can do all the political kite flying they like about having got a good deal at Christmas and having now made the best of a bad deal over the sanctions. They can blow all the smoke they like about tracking vessels and so forth, but the bitter truth is that boats with VMS can sink without being noticed, so I guess that shows how much actual monitoring goes on.

Nah, this'll play out in the courts all year and nothing will be done.

Wed Jan 24, 2007 12:17 pm

So unless the Scottish courts do something they have gotten away free and clear.

Wed Jan 24, 2007 12:46 pm

so essentially nothing has happened - what gets me is why did the polititions make a song and dance about it at all

their main interest is the commercial fisheries - was it an oppurtunity for the killbegs crowd to show their clout

it all seems pure rotten to me - not even a slap on the wrists

scapegoated and not even at that
