"Wild atlantic sea bass"

Mon Nov 27, 2006 2:04 pm

was in lahinch amazed at the amount of surfers yesterday

more interesting was the specials lined up in Cavallino pub Lucianos

i enquired about the fish special and asked where in the atlantic - was told it was caught locally by the trawlers (twice)- and it was great to get a box of it for today!

i mentioned there being a ban of some sort etc. and was assured - that that was in relation to the size of the fish and all were above the minimum lenght

am i missing something here?

a) its farmed not wild
b) netted

eitherway not good

that was the name on the menu?!?! - it was on the main road going south on the N67 after the big turn left in the centre fo the town up about 100 yards on the hill (right hand side)

it had a black front to it - and a pile of US regsitration plates above the bar - anyone recognise this?

i would want to get the name of it right before i get onto the fisheries board - they shouldnt be selling irish bass full stop regarless of length - am i correct?

If its wild irish bass they should not be selling it no matter what size the fish are. It may well be farmed bass their passing off as wild but it wouldn't suprise me to have a restaurant selling wild bass. It's probably not a good idea to name the restaurant on the web site in case they sue.

well it seems - that they have a different name on the restaurant than the pub

if i get the name of the pub - i will gladly report it

from the tone of the person i was talking to before i mentioned anything about legallity - it being local - seemed a big selling point

the pub is on main street - if you know it please pm me the name - thanks

the word "sue" seems to have sent everyone to the hills

cant for the life of me - or the others with me - remember the name of the pub

dont feasibly think you should worry about suing. firstly if they have stated it is wild atlantic bass on the menu, they would more than likely want to worry about the fact that they are breaking the law by selling a fish which is banned from sale, or secondly if the bass is in fact a farmed substitute they will have to worry about false advertising.

just a thought........

I'm sure a quick call to the CFB and the Advertising Standards would be fine, telling each that you're telling the other....
