Minimum Shore Distance for Trawlers?

Thu Aug 03, 2006 10:43 pm

Yesterday I watched with much annoyance as 5 trawlers combed the coast at a distance of not much more than a decent cast.
They sucked the life from Dalkey sound and then followed the contour of Killiney bay to Bray until I lost sight of them past Greystones.
I was quite surprised to see the amount of fish they were draggin' in also.

Was always under the impression that trawlers have to fish outside a 2 mile limit but who knows where I plucked that from.
Is this true?

Anyway I managed to make out 3 of the regs in the hope that there is such a regulation. The other 2 were probably just about being good boys.

i think there is something against trawling that close to shore - but like most things who is going to stop them

fair play on getting the regs though

Does anybody know if dredging is restricted in any way? I've seen the boats out of wexford dredging so close around cahore that you can hear the conversations on the boats.

One of the outcomes is that what I think are greater weevers (or very large lesser weevers) are showing up on the shore.

The following article may be of interest...

There is a lot of stuff about legislative structures that doesn't apply this side of the pond, so you can disregard those bits.

But what there is is a few ideas for dealing with poachers, and boats setting gear right in on the shore and so forth that'd work just as well here...

Many ways to skin cat, etc....
