Waterford - Pair Trawling

Fri Oct 16, 2015 9:34 pm

I was tagged in a video on Facebook (Since deleted).
Luckily I saw the video before it was deleted. It was taken by a commercial fisherman. We was shouting abuse at the skippers of two big trawlers that were trawling in the channel up to Waterford City before New Ross.

I thought the boats were familiar. So I took a look on Marine Traffic. It was none other than the Rachel Jay and the Dillon Owen. These are the pair that hammered our mullet in Cork Harbour a couple of years back. By "mistake" of course.

The race to the bottom has stepped up a gear.

It would seem the boats were arrested.

Looks like a "fill the hold, we'll take the fine" gig.

Two fishing vessels were detained by the Irish Naval Service and escorted into Dunmore East this morning.
It is alleged they were fishing for sprat without authorisation.

The two vessels were observed fishing in Waterford Harbour by the Fisheries Monitoring Centre.
The LE Ciara which was in the area was sent to investigate and boarded the trawlers.
Both were detained at around 10.30am after allegedly fishing for sprat.
Fishing for herring and sprat is prohibited on the South East Coast from September 20 to December 31.
The trawlers were escorted to Dunmore East and handed over to gardaĆ, which is normal procedure.
A spokesperson for the Irish Naval Service said: "During the boarding and inspection of the two vessels a minor confrontation occurred between the two fishing vessels and a number of local boats.
"It is alleged by one of the detained boats that his nets have been damaged," adding that "this is a civil law matter".

Great capture by the relevant authorities. I can only imagine the damage done to stocks in the area though.

Anyone know what penalties, if any, were imposed on these boats?.

Arresting them seems not to have had much effect on their activities. The Dillon Owen was in Dunmore from 10.38 to 21.45 and the Rachel Jay from 10.33 to 20.24 on the 16th October.

Both are currently off Dublin heading north again. They both left Ardglass in the early hours of 15th October.

They should be treated as poachers and their boats and gear confiscated.
