BlackWater netting! Is this legal?

Wed Jul 16, 2014 2:23 pm

I was shown photos of snap/draft netting being done on the blackwater. I have viewed the bye laws for the blackwater district but can not see any definition of this type of netting. From pictures i have seen salmon do not have much chance to get up and spawn.
And the bye law has 1 day per week where fishing cannot take place for a period of time which is around 12 hours.
If anyone can shed some light on snap and draft netting i would like to hear some feedback. The IFI seem to have taken 1 step forward and 5 back in my opinion over the last 10 years to now.

Dunno. Have you phoned the IFI and asked them? You could try posting your question and pics over in the Irish Rivers Reports & News subfourm of salmonfishingforum.com. they'd be pretty familiar with the scene, I'd imagine.

Great to see that the tradition of draft netting is being preserved by a few. There are licences on many rivers and I'm sure that these are on the IFI website.

I have contacted them via e-mail today. What i want to know is if the IFI are monitoring this type of netting and if the said draft netting or snap netting is not drift netting. I will post on the other pages you mentioned.

Yes, IFI monitor the activities of legitimate commercial salmon fishers.

No, drift netting is drift netting. Draft netting and snap netting are entirely different things from drift netting.

Yes it is legal in the blackwater, also in kerry it is practised on the laune, Maine, feale and areas of cromane...

It's a disgrace really but these licenses should be bought out...
