Check out this link to the IFI web site. ( http://www.fisheriesireland.ie/Press-re ... coast.html )
This guy who was caught was (is????) at it all the time in dungarvan bay...how it took so long to catch the man i'll never know,

I just want to say thanks to the IFI guys, great work. Now watch out for him trying to pay off the fine by netting again (middle of the night type of guys....but I have seen the brazen so and so out on the cunnigar during the day)

Thanks IFI

€4,674.89 in total?

Ouch.

Their Honours don't seem to mess around down there in Waterford when it comes to handing out hefty fines/exes/costs. I'm quite looking forward to reading about the first to be imprisoned for a few months.

This guy and his two associates made plenty of money over the years netting dungarvan very regularly. When you have a sea food company as these guys do well it's easy to offload the fish. They'll be at it again without a shadow of a doubt..brazen doesn't even come close..also with the ban on discards I hear plenty of fellas are getting ready to net bass big style and hide behind the discards ban...I fear major poaching of bass ,sea trout and salmon.no where will be safe.

"Mr. Burke also highlighted that net fishing for bass was not illegal in other European jurisdictions" - well then kindly **c* off to those jurisdictions and do your netting there..! Delighted..!

Great work by the IFI.

I recently reported a net at a mark I was fishing. Got the name of a guy to call and a number from another board member on here. The boat arrived the next night to lift the nets. Very Impressed. Very nice guy to talk to also.

Four and a half large may be a lot of money to some people, but I can absolutely guarantee that illegal netters and poachers would simply file this under "the cost of doing business". It's great to see action being taken, but it's needs a more ruthless approach from the authorities. A prison sentence, even if it's suspended, would set a far bigger precedent as would confiscation of the vessel. I fail to see how seizing the net and the Bass will deter anybody from illegal fishing. But as I said, it's great to see a result here, and major congratulations to the IFI on catching this guy.

I hear what you are saying mate but its a start. The guy I spoke to said they dont get enough calls from people reporting activity. Its the usual - Ah thats terrible, attitude and sure someone has probably already reported it.

Lets give them our support and get behind them as much as we can.

Well in the past I had wondered if IFI had the will and/or the resources to enforce the bass legislation but at least in Waterford they now seem to be putting in the effort. Credit where credit is due. This prosecution along with the recent Saleens case is very encouraging.

guys no offence to the IFI but you'd nearly want to have 100 calls in before they would actually catch someone...

these guys (read the IFI press release for names and they're seafood companys names) have been netting in dungarvan for years...Once I remember in broad daylight in front of me as I was on the phone to the answering machine in clonmel..

I know for a fact that the IFI wouldn't have got this bust without a vigilant member of the public...who has put in lots of calls about various poachers over the last year...nets were found and staked out etc...one bust is a very low percentage.
Thats why a 4K fine is important.

The other alternative is taking the law into your own hands (not recommended but a possibility when nothing is being done)

MARK MY WORDS THE DISCARD BAN IS GOING TO INCREASE POACHING TEN FOLD.... I heard some local poachers are delighted and are already getting they're nets ready.....EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH OUT AND CATCH THESE F@@KERS
