There is no need for disgusting comments. There is also no defence for what he did. My personal opinion from what I have read here is the fine will have no affect on him. I just hope if he is ever caught again he is jailed.

Hi complete angler or can i call you compy for short. i guess we wouldnt be classed as mates so you can rule out helping out matey from your csi theory. But i do know him and have fished with him 2 or 3 times. Oddly enough he insisted on me returning a 10lb+ bass that had my dinner written on its flank ,another time 3 of us caught and returned about 15 bass with alot of tlc. Anyways the point of other post i made is that its like a cyber lynch mob on here regarding this posters coming out of nowwhere to get a kick in. Pity all that anger couldnt be channelled into forming a active group to actually do something about poaching rather than tapping a few buttons sure thats easy. Some of the petty name calling and illness references are abit tedious its turning into a frenzy ala african plains. Bet you any serious big buck poachers reading this are wetting themselves. Want to help----go down to your local pier and watch the boats coming in at 5am and ask kindly whats them silver fishys in them boxes captain.....

Hi Seanie35. Lets stick with the facts here. This individual has been convicted 4 times for poaching. His last offence was on a small river with very vulnerable stocks and is currently closed for angling. He is hardly the nice conservation minded guy you are trying to portray. Caught but how many times has he netted this river..well i can tell you the answer to that...hundreds of times. many on here are probably a little wiser than me and are keeping quiet you cant defend this individual. Many people are now employed on the south east and south west as angling guides, hotels, b and b etc this guys and his associates are putting jobs are risk. Sorry but i wont be silenced when I feel something is wrong I willl speak out its a forum im entitled to give my opinion.

There is no argument in defense of what has occurred, he was caught, went to court, convicted and fined, such is the law of the land. I am not condoning what occurred in any shape or form. However I do believe that some of the comments are a bit personal and it's easy to sit back behind a keyboard and slate the man.
I have fished with him as have many other members of the forum, at no time was anything illegal occurring and I learned a lot about bass and fishing in general from him.I wouldn't say that we are "mates" by the way, maybe as this is a small town anyone who fishes regularly for bass is well known. Again I am stressing I don't condone in any shape or form what happened in this particular case or any other previous cases. i think that the points of view expressed have demonstrated the feelings that are out there and I suggest that before it gets too personal that this thread is locked. I am sure that the "predictable fishing" thread will continue to be read by anyone with a passing interest in the influences/factors that affect our catch rates and I also seem to remember that initially "Cortaz" was on the forum as "poacher" , maybe he wasnt hiding anything after all.
Everyone should believe in something; I believe I’ll go fishing.

Lads its really important to remember that the fellas that supposedly come out of nowhere here to slate a convicted poacher might be the most conscientious and active people away from the keyboard. They might be interested in fishing and observe here without being that active in their postings. You want a lot of time and commitment to post regularly take photosof your catch etc If you fish in the sea /lakes/ rivers it can consume you and it can occupy your mind all day. So you might look at a forum like this every so often because it covers a lot like a good publiction but you ay not want to be a journalist on it. People prob came out of the woodwork because they felt the need to post as its soething that 99 per cent of anglers are repulsed by I can understand that. In all our own liitle areas we all realise how senseless and damaging the act was. The commercials and small boat poachers must be delighted that a high profile " angler" does this as it really strengthens their argument that this is happening inshore anyway.Such a pity and remember that regular posters who werent hiding in the woodwork often accepted/lauded/admired and engaged with the convicted poacher here on occasion. Finding reasons to partly understand/excuse his actions doesnt wash with me who could be someone considered to be out of the woodwork. The real world is in the shore/streams and waters around us they are what need to be minded

I went fishing with cortaz once(no money was paid for his help or advice) and was given tea and chat and he openly admitted to his poaching exploits in the past and the fact he was caught! ,including having pictures of his catches i dont think he is a bad person ,just a week one that couldnt resist the lure of easy money  a shame for someone who enjoys the thrill of fighting a fish on rod a line to stoop so low ,i suppose the saddest part of the story is the fact he duped the angling community into thinking a leopard had changed its spots, maybe the thoughts of help and advice from a bass hunter extraordinaire made it that bit easier to believe?
I think it was more than bass, seatrout and salmon that authur got in his net

The people that buy these fish are equally culpable.
A start from the top/down approach is needed to help tackle this problem.
It's probably easier for the authorities to pluck the odd poacher from the bottom of the supply chain than to walk into fancy restaurants and hotel kitchens and make arrests.
If there's no demand, supply will dwindle.
Heavier penalties are required throughout the whole poaching/illegal trading of fish shambles.

Wish this was an April fools joke.....

There is probably a similar person (or numerous people) in every coastal town along our whole coast. The penalties are pittance so they carry on regardless. Its scary the damage they must all do over the course of a year....or over decades in this case.

Sad, really sad.

How many people on here target Sea Trout without a license..? How many people have stuffed a trout into their bag..? How many people have kept more than 2 bass in 24 hours..? Are those people any better..? Im not accusing anyone by the way or condoning anything but sometimes we need to look closer to home and ensure we are abiding by the law, no matter how serious you think it is or not.

Ha ha not at all, but just a point that its all breaking the law even though we may not class it as severe.
Im just wondering if some of the people saying how disgraceful poaching is, have done any of the above.

Just saw what I did, edited to "2" :-)

The man has been caught four times is he not very smart or is he a easy target to catch.Yet bigger players in this netting game seem to do as they like its great that the fisherys lads got someone. But cant catch a boat that has been doing so much damage for years on the cork coast im sure its great to have him knocked off the most wanted list.Maybe now its time people had a think about the real player in the game who dont use small nets and a few rocks.....

Restaurants and fish dealers are checked all the time, including fancy establishments... I checked a Michelin star restaurant 2 weeks ago myself.
The problem is it's very hard to get evidence that will stand up in court that a fish has been illegally caught. . I'm not going into why it's difficult to obtain evidence as people might be reading this who would like to know how to avoid detection.
There are a small number of people netting the fish, and this is seen as the major crime. There are a larger number of people willing to buy the fish, rightly or wrongly seen as a much lesser crime. It is easier to target the people doing the actual netting as that is where the most bang for the buck is.

May I respectfully ask if having more than 2 fish on a boat Is not deemed as good enough evidence that a law has been broken by that skipper?

I'm certain the info is freely available regarding such law breakers, the question being why has no action been taken against them?

While I don't condone any illegal netting on any scale the recent news is far from dealing with the bigger issues in other areas. Let's see a heavy fine imposed on a boat with a few hundred boxes on board then we can all get justifiably over excited about someone being caught.
