My engine having been stolen set thoughts going round in my head of previous engines

. The first was a Seagull engine that a friend and I re-built when we were 16. She helped us get out to sea much further than a pair of oars. Of course she regularly broke down and we rowed back home. One night we got caught out in rough seas off Ballyquin and it was midnight when we rowed into the cove in Ardmore. Did we have any safety precautions……life jackets, radio, flairs etc? Of course not. My poor mother was understandably freaked out. Of course as a teenager I did not understand what she was going on about
As the years went by engines and boats improved

.
However, my fishing buddy, Michael and I still used his Seagull ( not the original one) for fishing on the lake. When it started giving trouble he brought it to be serviced in an engine supplier in Dublin but the matter was still not resolved. I volunteered to have a look and after stripping down what was a very basic carburettor she was up and running again.
Mick has since passed on

and his widow gave me the Seagull. It is worth very little but it suddenly dawned on me tonight that she needed to have the tank and cylinder oiled. So it is turning over again and I have given it a good oiling. How simple the old engines were
It then suddenly dawned on me that Mick’s anniversary is next weekend. Sometimes life experiences and thoughts are very strange
