The German view on our fisheries policy

Discussing the fallout from the Anglo Tapes Germany's bestselling quality daily newspaper (according to today's Irish Times) states that the bankers "are just one part of an elite that shamelessly exploits the island". It then looks critically at the long-term financial cost of the decision to allow non-Irish fishing boats into our territorial waters in exchange for EU subsidies. They are even more critical of our oil policy when former energy minister Ray Burke "sold off the island's" future" and gave oil companies 100% of their find with no licence fees. Bertie also cut taxes for oil companies in 1992 to 25%.

Selling the family silver indeed. It may hurt to admit it but it's hard to fault the German point of view on this.

Is it too late, maybe the Germans can adopt/invade us and save us from these feckin eejits

this was when the ff were in government,,last year 14 liecences were bought by oil companies to drill in irish waters

Regardless the oil companies will still keep almost all the profits in the event of any finds. Unlike Norway for example. I saw the current Minister Pat Rabbitte on The Frontline prog on RTE last year. Talk about flippant and dismissive. In short his argument was we have had no significant finds yet so 50% of nothing is nothing!
