BASSSSSS

Im not one to make a post about bass or bass fishing to be honest i have a strong dislike for that side of the sport and thats mainly got to do with the way people go on about them on this forum but thats for another thread.
I have been fishing since i could hold a rod at least 3 times a week after school and if i wasnt fishing i was reading about fishing and so on. I am now 24 so i have alot of angling years behind me and i never once heard about a bass ban or a 2 fish limit until i joined this forum in 2009 :? so how are people meant to know about the ban especially new people to the sport if they dont become a member of this forum and should someone new to angling be punished for keeping 3 bass while the ban is on because to be honest there dosnt seem to be much info out there for someone new to the sport. How did all of you find out about the bass limit and ban???????

Likewise, and share your sentiments about bass mania, even tho I was a devotee myself in the past. Its almost become a religion now. When were the closed season and the bag limit first brought in?

Away back in the 80's

Seaniebo wrote:Hi there,

As regards Bass, there is a minimum landing size of 40cm. You cant keep anything under that size and also a bag limit of 2 Bass in any 24hour period. There is also a closed season on Bass from the 15th of May to the 15th of June inclusive where you may not fish for them.

Some people think its ok to catch them during this period if they are putting them back but that is not the case. The idea is not to target them during this time.
Hope this helps,

Sean.

There are Bass marks around Ireland that are known to be visited by non-locals which is being promoted to foreign anglers. In these marks you can always / almost be certain that there are sign boards on Bass regulations.

It has the details on the ban dates when spawning / size limit / number of bass per 24 hour.

It is the same as when looking at the warnings and notice about catching and buying lobsters...

If you look around you'll definitely see them.

If you are local and grew up angling, you are most certainly have been thought by someone who knows the regulation / you probably bought gears from tackle shops who also would tell you about regulations when you inquire about how to fish for Bass and what gears to use and marks to go to. If you don't do those above mentioned items you would have definitely gone to forums such as this and would be aware of those regulations.

Seldom will there be people targetting BASS specifically and not know the rules on it. This is not mackerel that you can throw anywhere and catch it when in season.

My thoughts :D

A symptom of a many issues related to bass and other fish species too - most probably due to lack of will imagination and the continued failure to manage and promote internal resource expertise.

The first time i found out was when i lived in Kinsale for a few years. I used to drive round the road to Clonakilty and there are a few signs highlighting the ban and size limit etc, but, in the areas that i fish now in north/south louth, north dublin etc there is not one sign to be seen or a fisheries officer either so its pretty much open season with some people fishing and a lot of poaching.. You will also see information on the ban in some of the fishing magazines, but you make a very good point Shane, unless you visit this forum, buy some of the monthly magazines or see a sign that are mostly only put up only in the very south of the country, ye probably wouldn't have a clue...
