Salmon Farms in Ireland

Hi lads,

I know this is nothing to do with sea angling as such but I'm sure you'll agree it is very important nonetheless.
We are currently battling the proposal of new salmon farms in Ireland. A huge 15,000 tonne farm is proposed off of Galway Bay, along with many more along the west coast as far down south as Bantry Bay. I am currently a committee member of a group called NSFAS, No Salmon Farms At Sea. We are having a protest outside of Minister Coveney's office on Saturday the 15th in Carrigaline, of which we hope many will attend, but aswell as that we have a new website which is currently being worked on,http://www.nosalmonfarmsatsea.com/. This farce cannot be allowed to happen as it is going to ruin wild salmon and sea trout populations, not just on the west coast, but all over Ireland. There are so many more effects aswell, all detailed on the website. Do please show your support, thank you.

It doesn't matter that its not to do with sea angling as such , we're all part of this same problem.As anglers we are overlooked in favour of "bigger" commercial interests and the environment is barely given a second thought. OUR fishing this year has been poor and it is already starting to have a negative impact on Ireland's position as one of Europe's top angling destinations and I'm not just talking about bass+salmon here either .

Its good to see you salmon and trout anglers have some back-bone and are prepared to do more than just moan about the situation. Well done for getting this organised , I hope you get plenty of support on Saturday . I have friends going and if I can get out of work I will be joining them, its unfortunate I only heard of this march tonight. Stopping the alarming decline in Ireland's fish populations is worth fighting for and a show of solidarity against the people that are ruining these natural resources is long overdue.
Commercial fishermen,and their government grant aided new fleet ,and polluting grant aided fish farmers are ruining the stocks in this country any fool can see that, its already been done over nearly all of Europe , it'll be totally fluked here any time soon.

But it is to do with sea angling, sea trout angling in salt water will be of a lesser quality for evermore if those farms go ahead. We can only guess how badly it will affect sea trout numbers but rest assured, whatever it is like now will be a thing of the past if salmon farming of the proposed scale goes ahead in Galway Bay.

It is the same sea that the farms will be polluting with excessive salmon lice, sewage, pesticides and medications. They use up sea fish to make the feed for the farmed fish also.

Basically, salmon farming only gives the sea bad stuff, sewage, pollution, detrimental to wild fish stocks. It does zero positive for the ocean and an awful lot of bad. The sea bed below salmon farms can be so polluted it is a dead lifeless desert. A small number of investers become wealthier from the industry, but its all of the rest of our environment they destroy. They give nothing but take much. Its an absolute disgrace that it is allowed in this day and age. It is allowed for one reason only- its effects are out of sight and out of mind, hidden beneath the waves.
