Darwin Australia, artificial reef for shore anglers

Sat Nov 03, 2012 3:29 pm

I just said I would share this pic as I thought it is a fantastic idea. Basically the local authorities took three confiscated foreign trawlers and sank them about 20- 25 meters off a deep water wharf. They added a few concrete pipes and there you have an artificial reef for recreational angling from the shore (and two fingers to illegal fishing trawlers  ) .

Not only that, they also made a walkway off the main footpath with shelters, similar to bus shelters, for shade (because fishing in near 40 degree heat isn't as fun as you might think  ) steel tables for cutting bait, gutting fish etc. with a hole in the middle to dispose of waste... and a tap too!

I couldn't help but feel that they would end up destroyed by morons if something similar was to be done in Ireland, but lets hope some local authority might take a leaf out of the Auzzies book, make an example out of illegal trawlers fishing in Irish waters and give something back to recreational fishermen while they are at it (it would be good for local tourism and all)!!

Hopefully I will have something decent to show in a report soon, I have only been down there once so far but the place is teeming with fish, only problem might be getting the big fellas out of the water and up to the platform

what an excellent idea, thanks for sharing, dont think the irish goverment could manage a good idea like that tho, as they are trying hard to manage all the bad ideas and failing miserably

We could make a great reef out of all them pyrite ridden houses, north Dublin is crying out for help, but as said earlier this is Ireland so good ideas are not our speciality :(

The creation of artificial reefs has been put forward as a panacea to fisheries decline for many years now. Be careful of this approach, it's a very good way for both public and private business interests to get rid of their unwanted garbage and used capital assets, ref: Oceans of Life, Callum Roberts, Penguin Group 2012, Illustrations 44 and 45.

Far better to protect and nurture the natural environment.

That's the job Danny, tell Keith I was asking for him! Will have to try and make it over to him at some stage!

I agree that artificial reefs are not a practical solution to the problem of the decline in fish stocks but you have to admit that the sinking of trawlers used in illegal fishing sends a strong message to those involved in the practice.

Also if those trawlers are then sunk in such a way that they create an artificial reef that would benefit shore anglers then all the better!!! 8)
