Angler behaviour

I'm no saint and don't want to appear to be preaching but.................I went for a drive with my 9 year old yesterday after a football match and decided to pop into the tackle shop in Greystones. We then decided to get an ice-cream and walk up the pier to see what was happening. There were about six or seven anglers fishing away. There wasn't much litter but a lot of left over bait smeared into the walls. What I noticed in particular was the behaviour of one Irish angler. First I noticed that he was about to cast with his trace half wrapped around the end of his rod. I didn't have a chance to say anything and he attempted to cast with a resulting crack off. Careless? Yes, but nothing I haven't done myself. Following this a friend of his started to pull a fine dogfish up the wall. About three or four families out for a walk stopped to watch. Mr Crackoff then started to help unhook the fish and with this acomplished he threw the fish as far as he possibly could back out to sea with the action reminicent of a javelin thrower. There is no doubt at all in my mind that this was an incident of abuse. The look of disgust on the faces of the various spectators was noticeable and the thought struck me that there were at least twelve to sixteen non anglers turned against the angling community with this one angler's stupid actions. I'd doubt he's a member of this forum but people who know him surely are. Possibly a word in his ear might be appropriate? We can't continue to complain when beaches and shore front venues are closed off to anglers if we can't encourage others to clean up the act a bit.

i agree with you stephen and the worse thing is he probably uses these forums reguarly,,what people say on here and actually are two different things

That's a pity and a very bad example for the youngsters.

Was the first to arrive at the pier yesterday morning, place was filthy, took some of it home with me to bin, real anglers leave no trace.

when I arrived there yesterday at 5.30 there was one angler who was to say it mildly very stoned and he hadn't a clue he snapped off a few times.using a multiplier he left all his rubbish and walked off as I was leaving I was the last one on pier so I cleaned up all the rag boxes and squid people had left on the pier wall and binned it it's not that hard to keep the place clean there is a bin there. I wudnt hate to see how they live if they can't.clean up when they are out

Well done on the clean up. That was the one positive thing yesterday. There wasn't any rubbish lying around.

Hi Mark, well done on clean up. I was there at about 2.45. Mr Crack-off doggie tosser was a big lad to say the least. I don't think he was using a multi. The other lads didn't do anything out of line while I was there and I'm not in any way having a go at them but as you say it was a mess by 5.30 which is a shame.

I like here in Ireland, specially the people and the spirit, WHY ?

With all the falseness i mean, people do talk too much and pretending to be the ones who they aren't.
Not all, but most people do act like an animals, if there's no witnesses around. Some of them don't care even about the witnesses.
The whole explanation for that is ... indifference ... Im the KING of the nature and i do whatever i want to do ...

Was a bit disappointed myself to see quite a few empty bait containers left on a beach in the south east there on Saturday, not just one but in several places on an otherwise pristine beach. A carrier bag containing empty bait containers and bags was just left there to be blown away by the wind. Its just lazy and plenty of other people were using the beach. I was conscious of the walkers going past wondering if I was going to do likewise and go home leaving crap behind me when I had the energy to bring it to the beach when it was full and weighed more.

Not all anglers are as careless and inconsiderate, doesnt take many though to make a mess and make other folk maybe have questions about the responsibility of fishermen in general. Its not on. An ould pier that is already a hash is one thing but a pristine beach?

No excuse for littering , especially when there's a bin there . I'm surprised the Council put the bin there in the first place, because in my area the Council wont put bins in litter black spots because,,, believe it or not , they seemingly attract litter Joking aside, if that wheelie bin was in most other areas, people would be driving down to put their bin bags in it. I think the best option is to do what Mark did and just put the rubbish in the bin yourself, rather than having a confrontation with them and getting stressed Meself and Fishface cleaned up after a crowd of Middle-East looking guys (with kiddies ) who just walked off and left all their plastic bottles and bags behind them. We didnt say anything to them as we were already in their bad books for not giving them worms and our fish . Fishface had the last laugh though as they left a load of leads behind I also saw some very respectable and well spoken folks, tossing their fish,,,, which they were supposedly keeping for the table,,,over the edge when they were heading off . That was my 1st trip to a pier since last winter,,,,,,,,,,and all I can say is roll on the cold winter nights which will sort the men out from the boys

the auld eyes stare not working anymore or are you just getting old Dave jokes aside, anyone who is unlucky enough to confront me these days during a session must believe I am the worst human being they ever met. I really have turned into a grumpy, selfish, asocial and potentially unpredictable weirdo because of constant bad experiences with these so called 'anglers'. The camouflage works perfectly for me Mr. Nice Guy is dead.

I fished Balscaddan in Howth for the first last week and I have to say it was the worst mark I have ever fished! The place was covered in litter, a lot of it was beer cans and broken bottles prob from mack bashing as there was also an unreal amount of lure packets and old mono! I couldnt believe it!

It shouldnt matter if people are anglers or not. There is no need to leave trash anywhere. If u take it in you can take it out.look after the planet and it will look after you. And no I'm not a neat freak or an Eco warriorjustsomeone who gives a crap.
