Ive just been asked to sell my catch....

Sun Jun 03, 2012 1:11 pm

So i was just in an Asian/E. european supermarket earlier picking up some boxes of squid for bait, the guy on the till asked me if i liked squid since i was buying so much of it, i told him i was using it for fishing bait as i wasnt really a fan of cooking it myself... At first he seemed a little surprised that i should be using it as bait, but he then went on to ask me what i would normally catch using it, i told him i had caught the likes of Cod, Pollock and Doggies whilst using it, he then asked if i caught alot of them, to which i replied ive had a decent amount.....

His next question sorta shocked me a bit, he told me that i should go out and catch more, then bring them back to him and he would sell them..... To say i went speechless was an understatement!!!! I took my squid and got outta there quick.... I have no intention of selling anything i catch as i will not lower myself to that standard, plus my other half would crucify me if she found out i had caught something and not brought it home for her!!!!!

Im now wondering should i report this shop..... He had no issue asking me to get fish so he could sell them, begs the question how many others have been asked the same question....

Theres no way on earth if u fished everyday for the rest of ur life and brought him every fish u caught, that you could do more damage than a super trawler, so i say chill the bone man, i think everyone would prefer line caught fish than trawled destruction.......

Not wanting to burst your bubble here but we no longer live in the 'good old days'.....

As for my complaints, well given that we are being encouraged to catch and release more and more why is it that my concerns of someone asking me to catch fish so that they can sell them for profit are being brushed aside without issue....?

Why not to bring back the "good old days" ? :D You have anything against it ?
Its simple, you catch fish, will make small profit, he makes a small profit and someone will get fresh fish, everybody happy.
Many fish released wont survive anyway, so why not to make some other people happy with a fresh fish ?

If thats against your understandings, its simple, dont catch more than you can eat and also get your potatoes ONLY from Tesco ! :D

Doberman, we're in this for sport, not profit. If you sell any of your catch you're a commercial fisherman, not a recreational sea angler. That's simple enough to understand.

Wow, I thought there would be a lot more people against selling your catch , especially from the Sport side of angling, I for one fish for what I need, (and yes I grow my own spuds when in season, they taste a HELL of lot better then anything bought in Tescos!) now after a quick search  (ya think these things are ever quick!!!) its illegal to sell Bass, Sea Trout, and Salmon, (got that info from inland fishiers pg.) A lot of good points made on this subject, But we’re not the only Country to approach this subject, seemingly questions have been raised in the UK, and USA as well. We all agree that a line angler from the environment side of thing will generally have less impact then a trawler ripping up beds, (mind you a recent trip to Howth Cliffs would argue against that one!! Beer cans, empty rig packets, mono strewn everywhere) BUT a line angler can get to spots were most trawlers can’t and that’s in close grounds, so take the humble Wrasse, as an example, easy enough fish to catch, but very territorial, I heard on here several places that were fished out, as people kept the Wrasse, (and arguments ensued as to if they were FN’s or not, not that it matters!!) Then we look at Greystones New Pier, myself and a few lads fished it before it was opened, and it was brilliant, namely we did catch and release, and to counter the argument about fish survival after catching, if you handle the fish right, and have the right unhooking tools (forceps, flat unhooker ((on the section unhook flats properly)), and T Bar) , most fish can be returned with great success. But if we sold our catches the Wrasse population and the fish around our piers would be wiped out, as happened with the Greystones pier, due to people taking under size fish, (one night I was there there were teenagers killing EVERY FISH they got, small pin whitting to shore rockling, and I did give out to them) Now the fishing on that pier is generally crap and we cant blame trawlers on that, Its bad enough during these summer months we have the seasonal Macky Bashers arrive in their droves, Beer cans, Music blasting (and it aint John Denver!!), the use of the wonderful English language, and just for good measure the endless streams of empty tackle packets and mono! SO am I for selling your catch.. hmm good one.. I’m stuck on two issues, times are hard and they are about to get a lot harder, so do we impose our human hardships onto the marine environment to try and feed our families? Or do we act as protectors of the marine environment?
And as for a comment “return to the good ol days” in these Good Ol Days, we used to catch decent size codling all year round in Greystones, so that’s not really an argument as the fish stocks aren’t sustainable anymore..

I think at some stage most anglers have been asked or approached in some way about this kind of thing. But i think who would be arsed doing this kind of thing for Christ sake just go out and enjoy the fishing take a few for the dinner. Who want to go down the road of selling there catch the person asking to buy the catch is only going to screw ya anyway

Don't sell your fish to any shop, just put here in the Fishing Tackle For Sale/Wanted keep it in the family.
