Swimmers raise south beach greystones concerns

looks like they are getting some ideas from Dunlaoghrie Rathdown co.co. :?

A DELEGATION from Greystones Swimming Group shared a number of concerns with elected members of the town council at their monthly meeting last week.

A large number of swimmers currently use the town's south beach for sea swimming but have encountered a number of health and safety issues in recent times.

Ms. Clifford said that the use of the beach by both swimmers and fishermen led to some concerns regarding fishing debris (broken lines, etc.) as well as the dangers associated with the physical act of casting off in an area where there are other people.

The close presence of fishing boats and powerboats to the shoreline was creating another danger. While bye-laws covered how far boats stayed away from the shore, it was felt that perhaps these were not clear to all boat-owners and that the setting down of marker buoys of 200m or 300m might be helpful. Finally, it was suggested that an awareness campaign in schools might deter children from littering on the beach.

Cllr. Derek Mitchell felt it should be possible for the harbour to have more control over boats, while Cllr. Stephen Stokes suggested Greystones follow Howth's lead and maybe create a dedicated angling area.

Taken from the Bray People newspaper.

Someone needs to jump on this and point out the realities of angling requirements before that idea spreads.

Nor did I!!

If one or two dogs $h!t€ on the beach do you ban all dogs? If people are casting near swimmers their thick not "fisher men". Nothing to do with the mass of anglers that use and respect the resource that is greystones.

Just another note. On my last trip into Greystones I got €40 diesel, €8 in the chipper, €10 in Gotcha and €20 in the Supervalue although 10 of that was credit for the phone.

When I fish greystones or any beach for that matter I try and stay away from swimmers, but theres cases were swimmers come towards YOU!! they see you fishin, they see your lines out yet the insist in coming closer, In fact (not naming the beach), a swimmer got undressed behind me ((fully I might add)) whilst I was baiting up, and as she slipped into the surf in front of me she asked if I would mind her clothes, then proceeded to swim just off to the right of me, needless to say i was doing a lot of left side casts!! !:D

same with ppl on the beach, fishermen just seem to be a magnet for people to talk too"how long you been there" "what do you catch" "is this the right time of year to be fishing" are just some of the questions I get asked alot!! Its not our fault for wanting to go fishing, and its not thier fault for wanting to swim or walk, personally I think its a case of common sense (which oddly enough there seems to be less of these days???) as for the litter issue couldnt agree more, pick up rubbish.

and can someone point me to this magical area of Howth that is for fishermen??? I've been all over Howth and I havent come across it... is it down a secret tunnel or something...pm please i wont tell!!!

So now we are being told where we can fish or not by people who do not know a thing about fishing and all the ancestral that go along with it not to mention the amount of money we bring into there area!!!!!!

Well I have never heard of a dedicated place to fish in howth.... I know where it is its beside the sea.... and Jd yea its where the mack bashers fish as there is a sign stating " Danger angling ".

Wouldn't park my car down there when the bashers are around and as I have seen leads come off and if it is an " Angling Area " how come the tourists still climb the steps and ask the usual question ( not that I fish there anymore ) just the same on the beach.... so if we get there before the swimmers and set up all our gear and they go for a swim in front of us are we expected to pack up and move mark.....

Had it in Skerries with Creep the swimmers came from thee steps and kept swimming towards us as we where following out the tide they came closer and closer....

Maybe its them that need a dedicated swimming area like a Swimming Pool

Ye ive notice that since ive taking the fishing back up ive become a magnet to people walking the beach and asking silly questions i know they are no harm but at least let me cast out first!

Gezzzz Hell everyone is entitled to go on a beach and no i didnt get her number :(
But I think common sense should have a serious role to play in respect of others that goes for fishermen, swimmers, walkers and yes even dog walkers :D hell the amount of times I've had bait robbed on me by dogs is unreal, its not the loss of the bait but the fact some dogs will dig right into the beach buddy and I always make sure I pack knives and hooks away before casting out now!! I had one friendly mutt pee on the buddy whilst another tried to chase the lead out to sea during every cast , I suppose they didnt mention that at the meeting huh? what about the amount of as I like to call it doggie landmines?? :D

Fair play john for highlighting this ,had a guy in the shop today, he works for the council and
he was telling me that the council are getting emails nearly every day over the litter and all
types of fishing gear that is left on the beach ,from discarded line to bits of traces and those
plastic bait containers. if anglers dont start looking after their enviornment there will nothing
left for any of us . these people give us all a bad name

Re: Swimmers raise south beach greystones concerns

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:33 pm

there's no doubt that a minority of anglers get the majority a bad name because of their slovenly habits, however I
have yet to see an angler squat down in full view and "back one out",then stand up look totally unconcerned ,and walk off, leaving a shi*te the size of a mini roundabout, buts thats ok somebody else can take care of it,"oh my dog.took a tinkle on your little tent".... so sorry ,not!.....just do what i did, picked up the "barry white"and bounced off the owners head......always found a root up a yorkshire terriers h@le rapidly cures it of its desire to pi$$ on my lovingly dug worms.. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well even after all the talk on here and getting the ear of people in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council their little buoys marking where boats are not allowed, and signs saying no fishing were slipped in the back door of By laws at some meeting.
Wonder who the Greystones Swimming Group are? and how did Ms Mairead Clifford and her group get to make a representation to Greystones Town Council wouldn't imagine that happens easily.
I can see little marker buoys appearing off Greystones and signs telling people where they can fish. But hey I will probably give them the same respect I give the ones in Dun Laoghaire. :D
Enjoy your fishing boys, act responsibly, clear up your rubbish, encourage others to do the same, and leave the "small minded we are the only ones who count" to believe in their own publicity. :D

something like this could be a real problem for the charity fundraiser Im hopin to pull off :( Hopefully someone will see sense and notice it isnt ALL anglers that do this, and I think for this event to be successful in all formats we need to be sure that every scrap of waste is picked up and disposed of, that way we can at least say "SEE WE ARE responsible for the environment and care about it", last time i was in Greystones I notice the amount of Doggie Land mines every where despite a huge mural painted on a wall behind us says "if we could we would pick it up!!" (with a picture of a dog, took me a while to figure it out!!)

Re: Swimmers raise south beach greystones concerns

Yea some picture not to mention the fact that the dog owners let there dog of the leash and let it run free while stealing your bait and then the owner comes up to say SORRY and just walks off while we are left counting the cost of fresh bait being a " dogs dinner ".

Where is the fairness in that as we dont run around pi$$in or dumping all over the place..... Have even found that as about to cast out the dog is trying to get the worms of the hook...... Now that be some dogfish.... and i make sure that the beach or mark is clean when I am leaving....

why not bring a few rolls of bags and give one to every 5th angler at your event to look after any rubbish that might present it self during the day.
