commercial fishing for mullet

i was informed today that steps are being taken to try and open up mullet stocks to commercial fishing. on hearing the news i contacted the dept of fisheries by telephone. they would neither confirm or deny this news over the phone but they did ask me to email them my details and told me that they would forward it to the relevant bodies and i would have a prompt response. that was at 10am this morning and i am still awaiting that response.

this is just a short post to make the users here aware of what may happen at some stage in the near future. as soon as i hear more i will update this post.....

There would be no need for any department to try and open mullet stocks to commercial fishing as it has never been closed.

commercial fishermen can target mullet stocks in ireland? i was led to believe differently.....

yes rampant is right,,there was never a ban on commercial mullet fishing but ive never heard of any commercial fishermen tackling mullet stocks,,,or even have i heard of any the local suppliers heard importing them.....i really dont think that the commercial mullet fishing would be of any use to the commercial fishermen,,,what you get the mullet in piers,dirty canals,rivrers etc and there normally in shoals of 6-10 fish,,now dont get me wrong you can get bigger shoals,,,i wont be eating them anyway

Mullet are almost identical to bass in all ways. They even taste similiar.... and some area's (south england, france and Channel islands etc.) mullet is preferred to bass etc.
Small ones start out in the esturies and big ones hit the open sea. They are detriutis feeders but the bigger ones are opportuinistic and will eat live small fish or crabs etc.
I have swum in shoals of mullet upwards of 30 fish in distributed shoals and would estimate that there could be 6 or 7 localised shoals of mullet giving a much larger shoal...

As for eating them, they are lovely and highly prized in Europe... But most Irish refuse to eat them...

There are already small scale commercial fisheries for mullet in operation in Ireland and they have been for some time. Although samples of these fish are being regularly subjected to heavy metal anyalsis.

In Cork harbour the bass travel with the mullet and both are the target of local fishermen in punts and small boats with outboards.

They start the net off at the edge of the mud and travel out in a large arch sometimes with up to 400mt of net. They then drive up and down on the inside of the net forcing the fish into it. All this is done in less than an hour.

No use in ringing anyone about it as they are well gone before anyone would arrive.

seen whole, fresh grey mullet for sale at the fishmongers in eyre square, galway a few weeks ago, so sombody is catching/selling/buying and eating them
