Cigarette butts prove highly toxic to fish

Thats mental, even unused butts can cause harm!

you cant just stop throwing butts in to the sea they will have to be weaned off gradually im going to bring out some nicorette gum next time im out and what about the smoked cod? nicorette cod just doesent sound right

i would have thought putting any sort of toxin into only 1 litre of water would kill off half the fish in it

plus how many fish can you fit in a litre of water anyways?

to me the results are kinda obvious but dont seem scientifically conclusive that cigarette butts could have an impact in the wild.

actually it reminds me of a report i read from amercian scientists who determined (from over feeding rats) that fat people eat too much. money well spent there

I'm always a bit cynical about how scientific research/reports are reported in the papers - especially the tabloids.

with all the crap,chemicals,and poisons dumped at sea in the last 50yrs .i dont think a cigarette butt is anything but a speck in a very large septic tank that is going to bite our future offspring in the ass

Not convinced that they're a problem in the sea, but I've caught many a stockie rainbow that has been stuffed with them, they look very like the pellets they would have been fed on in the stew ponds. I refuse to fish in one particular place on account of the number of fish I've seen taking them off the surface while the owner provies no means to dispose of them properly. As for the anglers too ignorant to pocket them...

that proves that it s not that toxic for the fish if there bellies are stuffed. if you get a pint of water and put a butt in it.
leave it for a day and then put a goldfish in.the fish would die straight away. but in moving water and in rivers or seas i cant see it having any effect

We can all do our bit to keep our waters clean. No matter how small, it sets an example for others to follow. If you truly love your angling you will respect it's environment! It wouldn't be a big job to keep a small tin on board your boat for cigarette butts just as a rubbish bag is kept for bottles etc.

its simple, take your rubbish home and dispose of it properly - cigarette butts are rubbish, end of
