RIP Michael Bourke

Thu Apr 21, 2011 3:02 pm

It was with considerable regret that I heard the news that Michael Bourke of Bourkes tackle in Kilkee left us a few days ago. Michael was a true gent and an absolute gold mine of information to me and my partner re knots, tackle, marks and the like when we first took up Sea fishing a few years ago. No visit to the area was complete without popping in to see him and even after an absence of 4 or 5 years, I walked into his shop a couple of months ago and was greeted like an old friend and sat down behind the counter for a good old chat with him having kept abreast of my own exploits through IA and the like remembering me from times past. There arent many people on this planet would treat you as well as he did and it is with deep regret I offer sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP Michael, you will be missed, had it not been for your help in the early stages I'd still be throwing Gummi Macks at the macks off Dunlickey. Go in peace my friend.

Very sad news a great character and very nice fella who loved his trade and all who passed through it.

Fondest memory was a few years ago 4 of us went up to carrigaholt from Waterford early April in search of Ray. A long drive and high hopes we stopped at micheals who came from his bed to open up and supply all the bait and last minute bits we needed. After a good long chat and plenty of top advice he wished us well on our search. Full of local hot info we surely couldn't fail despite a bitter east wind and conditions far from ideal. 7 hours later and 1 Ray between us we left for home dejected and fed up. I called Michael as promised to tell him how we got on, after pouring my heart out about how hard we tried etc his response was delivered without hesitation, "sure I could of told ye that this morning, wasting your time with that east wind" :D
Apparently we never asked if we'd catch on the particular day we were there :D all his advice was for later in the year. Brilliant!

Big smiles the entire way home and to this day when I think of him saying it.

He will be sadly missed by all who ever had the pleasure of dealing with him.

We could only laugh

He put me on to the mark where I caught my first Irish ray and treated me like a local from day one. Always willing to advise, even if we had a few disagreements about bait. RIP Michael.
