Rare Catch!

Anyone out there caught a Bluey when shore angling. A mate caught one couple nights back on Kerry beach. I wouldnt of believed it only for witnessing it myself , and yes he was alive and kicking not outta the freezer . Are these an Irish species? Any info at all would be very welome including specimen etc.

First you need to decide what it was your buddy caught.
I would have reckoned that blueys were “saurys” or "skippers". (I have caught them from the boat off Brandon)

There is no specimen listing for saurys though there is for the smaller of the garfish.

we caught on about 8 inches long in Bantry Bay 4 years ago. Didn't have a clue what it was until some of our guests turned up with Blueys.
Looked a definate miniature version. Still got got in the freezer somewhere.

As Jim says it would have been a Skipper (scomberesox saurus), saw my first one in the flesh at Weymouth last year.

The blueys that we get here for bait are a Pacific cousin.

Cool cool cheers guys, looks like our water is definitely getting colder and for longer. Hope that brings us more of the cod variety.

rather it got warmer for longer and encouraged more species like tarpon etc - but can't have everything

We can always dream although i would have to purchase a whole new set of rods for that type of fishing

I have not caught one before and don't know anything about them but was just wandering if anyone has ever even seen an albino lobster?
