The mink is an amazing preditor and it will not take them long to adapt to the wild and soon they will decimate the small mammal population, water fowl domesticated fowl and even pets.
There cant be many of you who havent already encountered mink on your fishing trips so an extra 5000 will put massive strain on the food chain.

Yes they will have a big impact on the indigenous species and ravage everything in sight, also if you encounter one of these on your travels they are very aggressive and can give a nasty bite so stay away.

Who the hell else would want to release minks so that they could live free other than the animal rights nutters. Isn't it bad enough that a viable business in a employment black spot will have to be closed down because of a few bloody hippies in the green party.

That's bad alright. What kind of cop on do these people have doing things like that. Wait till you hear stories of little kids losing their household pets to a crazed lunatic mink and see how the animal lovers feel then. Hopefully they'll get the problem under wraps before it spreads too far. I've never seen a mink before i looked at the photo in that article. I wouldn't know the difference between them or otters or ferrits or anythin like that. I'll just be weary of the whole lot in future.

mink are everywhere already - youd see them a lot out fishing - very adaptable types

there have been a couple in salthill lately, they're very big aswell, noticed them while fishing, dirty things look like they would give a nasty bite.

I've seen a few in North Clare on the coast and some inland. I had one in my back garden but it was carrying a dead rat so which is the worst of the two evils?

Mink are savage. They kill for killing and not just for food.
A fox will take one chicken. Mink will kill the lot, for the hell of it.

if there was no demand there would be no mink!!! - they are all originally from north america - they have been escaping here and there for a long time and are well established buggers

"Vampire Mink"

Valentia Is. was full of them a few years ago. They would come down and take the fish from under your feet. No fear what so ever. I would try to hit them with the rod and they just dodged and kept coming back. In the end I just backed off. Once they got a few macks they seemed to be happy. Would have to say thought, I was intimidated. I met a few out shooting as well though and when you got a 12 bore its not half as bad. I won those encounters.
Good news is that they seem to be after dying out in the Valentia area as I have not seen one now for a few years.

Thought i seen an otter in Galway bay not so long ago - it was robbing scraps off a small trawler - could have been a mink?
