The minimum size limits also seem to be very small. 58cm conger, 27cm whiting, 35cm cod. Bit of a joke really. Most of the fish listed to that minimum size would be very juveniele fish.

This is quite poor indeed, no wonder fish stocks are so poor, i wouldnt keep a whiting @ 27cm and i guarentee some over payed clown decided these fish sizes going against all scientific reason!!!1

You wouldn't buy a bloody 27cm whiting either, most of these fish are probly goin for fish meal or somethin like that. Could be wrong there but i've never seen fish that small in mongers. Would it not make sense to farm fish for uses like feeding cats. They won't know the difference.

You're right there.

it just goes to prove what we have been saying all along they take every thing in there path sort out the s*** and toss back everything undersize dead

twelve mile limit for trawlers and a 5 mile limit for longliners let all the stocks regain and regroup. and maybe then there might be something left for our grand kids.the documentry end of the line it shows how its happening all around the world .if you look closer to home you will see how quickly the stocks are depleating here

No boats trawl up this way inside the 5 miles in fact not much trawling done up this way at all.Longlines still catch small fish and im sure somebody on here would have a moan that the liners use mackeral for bait lol whats needed is a closed season a long the lines of Icelands system fish for say 8 months of the year keep all you catch no discards then the boats tie up for the rest of the year.

The pollack are after takin a fair hammering since the price per box shot up. Not too many photos of good size pollack showin up on the site this year. They used to be everywhere round the coast. Horrible shame that the lads makin these minimum size laws can get away with doin that kind of thing to any creature. You can be sure if it was birds of some land animal that people can see then it would be different. I'd love ta see whats actually goin on in the seas. Probly be sick though.

Bit harsh calling men that are trying to earn a living pricks just shows the level of pure idiocy that seems to abound here
Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:44 pm
think the name calling is uncalled for
however, lobbying for smaller sizes and bigger quotas contrary to scientific evidence is pure idiocy in my opinion, particularly if your planning to earn a living beyond a few seasons into the medium term
maybe you are correct that the Icelandic model is the way to go with strict closed seasons - im sure their entry to the EU would soon put paid to that unfortunately
I would also like to know how heavily they police their waters to enforce the closed season

As far as i have seen no one is lobbying for smaller sizes, bigger quotas yes science doesnt always get it right as far as quotas are concerned the fishermen themselves are not consulted on what state the stocks are in.The closed seasons in Icelandic waters are policed quite heavily to my knowledge it has to be for it to work.Contrary to the opinion of most on this forum fishermen dont want to hoover up all in front of them its not in their advantage to do this they need fish to breed and grow to keep the industry alive. Its the closed mind mentality on both sides, anglers and fishermen that causes problems both sides should be standing together not fighting one another. The name calling that happens here just shows anglers up i think its the wrong way to go.

These size limits are nothing new and have been in place, with minor changes for over 30 years.

iv never used name calling as a way of getting a point across. i think the other lad might edit his post.but it still doesent make whats going down palatable.the iceland season is heavily policed with a horn sounding the start and the finish of the season .but not only that it means, when it6 sounds thats it finished,no more of thjat species and all longlining no nets within 5 miles

Ach theres no talking to some folk bury your heads in the sand and keep whinging about commercial fishermen that will make it all better
Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:52 pm
there has too be two sides to argue something. im certainly not with my head in the sand.about the issues thrown up here we have hit off this dozens of times. the last time a few weeks back.i had a deep suspision that some commercial fishermen in the dublin area were keeping tabs on the angling reports placed on this site. as soon as any sort of quality rays or other fish were posted two days later trawlers on the grounds mentioned some might say unlucky i say bullshit.its been happening to often. the last time last month two boats members of this angling community were forced to cut anchor ropes before they were rammed by these so called fishermen maybe the word used above would suit here.i posted that all trawlers were rapeing our shores for everything and sure enough three comercial fishermen answered the post. the point is if there was a 12 mile limit on trawling we would then be on a half level pegging with long lines only allowed. it will give these grounds a chance to grow and replace all the habitats that have bee left so barren from the damage the trawel has done

Was on a bit of a rant in my last post in this topic. apoligies. The commercials have to make do with what they can and as long as they go by the rules that are made for them, they are hardly to blame and i wasn't trying to do that. Just misunderstood. I was talking about the same thing i commented on earlier in the post. Stupid laws which allow juveniele fish take a hammering. Not allowing the species a fighting chance. Apoligies again for the name calling. I'm sure they're nice people but just not too fond of how they go about their jobs.
