Irish Beaches!

Interesting read...

Same comment from me based on my observation to the area flagged. Wondering if there's anything else we can do to help as a group.

that report looked bad for the whole island of ireland and especially when its published in a brittish website yahoo.serious money needs to allocated to improve the water quality as we have some of europes best beaches if maintained properly.i can remember one time mayo county getting 11 european blue flags for their quality.maybe thats has an effect on our fishing who knows.as well from water quality all our beaches need new signs and signalling in all the different foreign languages as well as the head lands

Its not just the water quality the state of the beaches is gone downhill big time.

Sadly I can report that this is a problem that we have up here in the North of Ireland too.

Alot of our beaches around our coastline are dirty and really do need a good clean up. Not only is our water quality bad but the actual beaches themselves need sorting out too.

Both the water quality is at an all time low on many of our beaches and the beaches themselves are full off weed, slim and other grime which is both unpleasant to look at never mind walk on or sit on.
God knows what any tourist who comes here must think when they see these beaches in question. It's embarrassing and needs to be dealt with.

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of lovely, clean beaches in Ireland but I would say that the bad/dirty ones outnumber the good ones which is a shame.

Who is to blame for this? Have we got a responsibility as anglers?
Yes, we do. We can help by making sure that any rubbish we have is put in bins and not thrown on the ground/beach. We can make sure that any dog droppings are lifted and disposed off correctly into the bins provided for this very purpose. We can help by making sure any fishing tackle or old bait isn't left lying on the beach behind us when we leave.

Every little helps but it's going to take a massive effort to clean our beaches up and one that will take alot of hard work and people power to do.
It’s a bad reflection on us all in this country and portrays a bad image to tourists who read such reports as a country that relies alot on tourism this could do alot of harm if things don’t improve.

I feel that our local authorities/councils could do alot more by introducing stricter laws and enforcing the ones that already exist with regards the behaviour that is expected from us when we visit a beach. Fines should be handed out quicker and warnings to put people of littering or causing a mess.

Could more bins be put around our beaches so that people can dispose of their litter in the right way rather than it ending up being left lying on the beaches and usually ending up in the water when the tide comes in?
We have a group called the conservation volunteers up here in the North but never have I seen them down on a beach cleaning up any weed or rubbish that is on it. They see more interested in flowers than our beaches.
Could youth groups get involved in the summer time and use this opportunity to go around some of our beaches as a way of education young people on the importance of keeping our beaches tidy?

There’s alot of things that could be done but it’s the same old story, everybody moans about these sort of things going on but when it comes to doing anything about it no-one is there to help or volunteer to give a hand.

I think that it is a good idea to have any signposts that are there put up in different foreign languages as well as our own so that any tourist who is visiting our beaches can read and understand them clearly so that there is no misunderstanding or problems interpreting our laws on the beaches. These things would all help.

I have to praise the efforts of the members on this site who have recently been trying to do something about the problem that exists in the Sutton area and who are contacting their local T.D to see what support and help they as the local authority concerned in the area can give them in their task. Well done everyone involved in that!
Perhaps more of this sort of thing needs to be done around our coast, particularly in the areas highlighted in the report in the link that was provided above.

I'm with the above posters on this one. I've been to a lot of beaches in my lifetime, be it in Italy, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia to name a few but I've never seen anywhere as bad as here  from camping and household over to hospital waste, we throw it at our backsides. But what really gets me are the people who drive miles to a beauty spot and then chuck their rubbish out on it   :?:

Took a dander along a well known bass beach in wicklow this morning. Ah yes, beautiful morning, nice little surf, and then the beach itself, well that just made the moment, maybe it was all the smashed up beer bottles/cans, the disgarded tents (I counted 3), disposable barbecues, clothes, cooking utensils, matresses, food containers etc etc. Mother of buck:twisted: !!!!! There was also a jogger running barefoot on the beach- brave man!!!!
