Cod Prices

Tue Nov 10, 2009 6:18 pm

I've just been to the shops and was very surprised to see a well known Irish brand of cod fillets on sale for €2.50. The weight was 450g and an estimated four fillets per bag. Under the cod was whiting on sale for €4.99 for 450g!

Now how is that? Cod is a protected fish with limits on numbers been caught and whiting seem to be in ok supply. Should the cod not be more expensive?

This is not a conservation rant I just want an explanation if anybody has one.

Its probably imported farmed cod used in the preparation of these fillets. Good indication would be small fish fillet sizes in the bag because codfarms don't have any size restrictions or other limitations to adhere to.

That may have more to do with the buying power of big supermarket chains than the fishing industry, Saw a TV program last night where one big UK chain pay farmers less for milk than it costs the farmers to produce and they were rather proud of that fact

Ah maybe it's farmed but if I was buying Colon I want it to say Colon. I'd be surprised if supermarket pressure could effect wild cod prices but deffo farmed. I was just surprised at the price difference. At that price I think I'll go into the whiting business

There was a cod farm in Bertraghboy Bay in Galway but the lease ran out I believe and the salmon farm started up again
