recognising net caught bass in fishshops.

Hi all,
this may seem like a silly question or does it even have an answer.Yesterday whilst i visited a local fish shop i noticed a few small bass,all of which were differant sizes.Firstly i thought farmed bass would generally be same size.The bass had blood in there eyes and their gills well out from the main body,my question is basically is this the norm for farmed bass or is it a gill net trademark.
Also most of the fish had location of catch ie bream/caught in the indian ocean etc except the bass and mackeral.I know farmed bass are small but ive never seen their gills like that or blood in their eyes.

yes that sounds like fish that have been netted the gills are pulled out and rigor sets in

theres always a chance that they were removed from their pens by net, anytime ive seen illegal bass for sale the variations in size were bigger anything from 1.5lb to 5 or 6lb with the larger ones filleted

Sounds like illegally netted bass alright. I was in local fish shop last December I saw something similar. Normally the farmed bass are uniform in size, and dont show any sign of blood. I havn't been in there since, now get fish in Supervalu

They are too smart for that - the probably sort out the smaller ones for sale in the shop - the bigger ones are shipped off abroad.

If they were in the shop I think Marlinman is talking about then I would be almost 100% centain they were Irish.

we are on the same wavelength .A bit strange if you ask me and as i was having a good peak at them,i too was been examined by the shop owner .If they were from other parts why did'nt it say so amongst the fish as it did with the other fish on display.I know of another establishment that displays all the locations of where their fish on display come from including its bass.
Hopefully im been paranoid and its all above aboard which it more than likely the case.

Because i have an idea, if i do knoiw this shop i could send the girlfriend in ( shes austrian) she has a bit of an accent so she could ask where they came from, dont think anyone would suspect an innocent woman muha hahahahahahahaha

firstly farmed fish are not taken out with gill nets there is no marks or blood because any fish shown any sort of defect would be sent back by the supermarkets if you feel these are illigal fish take a picture of them if the owner has nothing to
hide he wont mind you doing this if he throws a wobbler show them to your local fisheries officer and let him do his job

Twinkle you right there. It would be much more productive if someone that has a suspicion that Bass are being illegally sold, would just pick up a telephone and ring the Regional Board or the SFPA who are very much interested in fish outlets. The SFPA can enter premises and obtain paperwork and any other relevant evidence that they need. If they get enough calls and emails, particularly emails which are CCd to someone else such as your club or federation, they will act. The plus side is that if such outlets are regularly visited and/or prosecuted they will soon get the idea.

Just wondering that if a person acts as an individual will it carry the same weight as say a group of people as some people would'nt be members of clubs or know points of contact other than the fishery boards of the region.Either way if an individual has genuine concerns and makes contact with the fishery board or SFPA should it still not be checked out even if it may prove to be all above board.

like i said go in with a camera take a few photos and give them to your local officer let him proceed from there if the shop is all above board they wont care
