SHARK steaks are on sale in a seaside town after a trawlerman landed a monster catch in his net.
Richard Brannigan was fishing for prawns off the coast of Skerries, Co Dublin, at the weekend when he got more than he bargained for.
The skipper of the Ambitious trawler caught a porbeagle shark weighing 120kg.
Porbeagles are common in Irish waters but they're rarely caught and are not that popular with trawlermen.
The catch was bought by Doran's fish shop on Howth Pier where it was on display until last night.
Sean Doran said the shark was being cut up for steaks, which will be available from today at Doran's on the Pier, the adjoining Octopussy's tapas bar, The Oar House restaurant, and in other eateries supplied by Doran's.
Fish lovers elsewhere in the country who want to sample the shark can order some on http://www.seafood2go.ie
For those who have never sampled a shark steak, Mr Doran said it's a meaty, oily fish.
"The closest would probably be tuna steak," he added.
The porbeagle caught at the weekend off Skerries eats smaller fish such as dogfish, Mr Doran said. But it is not dangerous to swimmers.

Sadly, the porbeagle is now only rarely seen in British and European waters, as a result of
decades of exploitation by commercial fisheries for its valuable meat, oil and fins. The Northeast
Atlantic population is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN (World Conservation Union) Red List of
Threatened Species. (..) There is no management for the severely depleted porbeagle shark population in the Northeast Atlantic
