nets

saw nets on a pier the other day and they seemed to be using 3 concrete blocks tied together as weights at different points along the net to hold them down,to me it would seem that the nest were left in the sea for a long time
anyone have any ideas about them?what would the nets be used to catch?

also at the pier there were a lot of dead ray and dogfish and huss in the water,could not get a good look or photo as it was fairly dark

Either pollack nets, or illegally anchored nets for salmon, set so as to be just under the surface and "covert".

It'll be interesting to see what the Galway based members think.

Have a look at the mesh size GF, ray nets would usually be quite large meshed, much bigger than salmon. Not nice to hear of dead huss and ray being chucked back

if the pier is in connemara then the nets were probably set for cray. ray and dogs are not good lobster bait, so they would be discarded, they would also be long dead as the nets would be set for 3 or 4 days.

Lots of nets lying on the various little piers around me up here, GF. I'm told they're mostly for pollock and that the lads were getting up to 100 euro a box earlier in the year. Some former top pollock marks now dead.

the nets in the pics, are" tangel nets" set mainly for monk/rays/lobster/crays, they are left on the seabed for up to a week, these nets are ofter used by fishermen to thin out the seals.

The correct way to measure the mesh is to pull it tight and measure between knots, most tangle nets (also known as turbot nets) will be around 10 inches and don't use any floats, not sure what the bricks are for unless they use them as anchors, most use grapnels or big lumps of pig iron over half a hundred weight.. Tangle nets are just brought ashore at the end of the season usually so you can easily tell a tangle net buoy from all the growth on the buoy at sea. They haul em about every 3 days move em inshore slightly and shoot em away again, They are quiet legal unfortunately
